Took my custom springfield out yesterday.
had good weather for a change, so I picked up my hunting buddie and went and squeezed off a few.
All the loads I used in the Roberts were with IMR-4350. That powder does real well in my little Ruger ultra light Roberts.
I used 100 grain bullets from hornady and sierra, 110 grain noslers and 120 grain hornady hollow points.
Most groups were in the 2 to 2.5 inch range largly spaced verticly.
I saved a few rounds to chrony and I have a prety good explanation as to why I had verticle stringing.
My velocity spreads were prety high.
Three rounds over the chrony with the 110 grain acubond were from 2614 to 2801.
and the 100 grain sierra was about the same only faster.
I have gotten good groups with this rifle and powder before but the loads were very mild.
I think I might try a slightly different tack with my next batch of loads.
I am thinking , of a 100 grain speer flatt base and loading with lets say 3 powders.
I have had good luck with IMR-4064 , and H-414, in the Roberts before, and looking at a few manuals. W-760 and H-4350 might be others to try.

Let us know your barrel length, it will have an effect on the powders suggested! I would almost be tempted to see what others favourite powders are for the 6mm Remington.

RL15 is working great in my 257AI.
I have a XP with a 15" barrel and I'm getting 2800 +/- 20fps with a 100NBT. I think these loads are a little hot, although there are no signs of pressure. I'll probably back them off some after hunting season when I have time to play. 3shots can be covered with a snuff can @200yds.

My 6mm likes H414 with 87gr Vmax and 85grn HPBT.

If you want the powder charge just let me know, I'll have to go out to the shop and look them up first.

For the heavier bullets, try some slower powders. My Bob likes H4831 with 120gr bullets (2980fps). And my AI likes IMR4831 (3050fps).

Give the 100 Hornady flat base a try, with 46-H4350 it does real well in my Douglas barrel. I've tried 3 different rifles in the Bob and all were fairly picky about which of the game bullet weights they wanted to shoot with. Two really like the 100 Hornady and none of the heavys I've tried. The other likes the 115-117 weight and the 100 TSX. You really ought to give that 100 TSX a try, it is the only one all three agree on.

I took a fork horned mule deer buck 2 years ago with that bullet over 46 grains of H-414. But that was from my little ruger.
I have a box of 100 and 115 grain tsx,s on my shelf right now.
I sure would like to get a good load for this rifle with a relitivly inexpensive bullet.
I have no qualms about spending a few bucks on a deer bullet but I want a good fun load for coyotes and just fun shooting.
I just did up some speer 100s over W-760.
Think I will; try that hornady over H-4350.
I will start at 45.5 grains. Hogdens web site show 45 grains as haveing a 45,400 cup rating and this springfield is a low numberd action. I don't want to go over 50,000 cup.
So far she has digested everything I have fed her with out a hickup.
FYI , I have an AI-on the way built on a FN supream action 25 inch douglas light sporter barrel.
That one is goona be Fun.

for 257 roberts, I started out with 100 gr. nosler ballistic tips, but my go to load now is 110 gr. nosler accubonds over 43 gr. h-414 federal 210 primers and oal of 2.885"

If you are getting vertical stringing, check the bedding of the barreled action in the stock.

For yotes and just jacking around try the 75 Sierra with around 43-44 H4895 for about 3400 fps. All three of the rifles I've worked with group under 3/4" with that one. I've never gotten around to playing with the 87s, but worth a try.

i get your point about the varmint typ bullets , But consider coyote hunting as practice for deer hunting.

If you are getting extreme variance in velocity check primer pocket preparation and check the things that might impact neck tensions: case OAL, lube in the neck, etc. Kudude

roger Are your cases getting a little long?

48-50 gr of RL 22 and the 120 Hornady HP in W-W +P cases works well in all my Roberts'....Velocity is pushing the 3000 mark with great accuracy....

woodhick: how has the 120gr Hornady HP performed for you on game?

I started another thrad about better performance with anoither range session.
I ddecided to work up 100 grain loads first.
I already have 2 good ones.
Then I will use the 110 and 115s. Then of course 120s will be last. Trimming the brass seems to have helped.
