<DWLshooter>Speedy 6.5's
I was wondering if anyone knew about any 6.5mm cartridge that can push a 140 bullet @ 3200fps.
It would be preferable if said round had a rimmed case and could be easily
made from an existing cartridge.
Thanks

DanD6.5 STW, 6.5 Gibbs, 6.5-300 Winchester, 6.5-300 Weatherby, 6.5 RUM, 264 Winchester. These will all do 3200fps or more with a 140, actually even a 260 Remington could get to 3200fps with a long ass barrel, but all these rounds will with average length barrels.
May I ask why is 3200fps your target number?

Paul HIf you're looking for rimmed, you could use a 6.5 WSM reamer, and form the brass from a 348 case. I'd considered building a hot 6.5 for an encore, and that was the plan of attack I was after, though what I really wanted were 120's @ 3500 fps.

StonecreekYou perfectly described the .264 Winchester Magnum, which is capable of 3200 fps with a 26" barrel (actually, that was it's original standard factory velocity with a 140 grain bullet, and original loadings out of a 26" barrel would come pretty close). It is also "rimmed" in a way, being a belted cartridge.
I can only assume that you're thinking of something for use in a break-open style rifle if you are wanting a rimmed cartridge. If you wanted to use actual rimmed brass, you could chamber with a modified .264 reamer, then load with .375 Flanged brass. .375 Flanged brass could also be used to make rimmed 6.5 STW.
From my long experience with various .264's, I don't think you would ever quite reach 3200 with a 140 from a WSM case without undesirable pressures and a very long barrel.

I get 3072 fps out of a 24 inch 6.5 mm SAUM, using H1000. Highest I could get was 3100 fps with 64grs but that's maximum in my gun. However I am more than happy with 3072fps.
I'm about to start ladder test Hodgon Superperformance over weekend. The other powder I might try is Retumbo.

Idaho Sharpshooterperhaps you could use either of the 450-400 Nitro Express cartridges. They come in 3" and 3.25" lengths.
iirc, AR member Butch Lambert makes a set of bushings and a die to neck down cases.

GrenadierSounds like you're looking for the RWS 6.5x68R and a long barrel.

mominerI used a loaner rifle last year in South Africa to take a nice Vaal Rhoebuck. The rifle was an customized Enfield chambered in 6mm Musgrave. Just an .303 Brit necked down to .243. My guide said that he has seen the case necked to 7mm and 6.5mm in other rifles in South Africa...something to think about...and it's rimmed!

Blair 338RUMThe 303 necked to 25 or 270 used to be very popular in Oz in the 60's and 70's...
there used to be a wildcat round made up on the 348 Winchester that was necked to 7mm it was super close to the wsm cartridges in performance.
necking it down to 6.5 wouldn't be much of a stretch.
a reamer would be about 3 bills.
a die set would probably be another 3.
but you could use a 6.5 neck sizer and a 348 body die if you figured the angles right.

vapodogFWIW, this is a 14 year old thread.....I doubt the OP is still interested.

HondoLaneWell, Nosler and Weatherby answered the OP's question with the introduction of the 26 Nosler and the 6.5-300 Wby. So, if the is still looking for an ultra-fast 6.5mm, they are at least now commercially available. I think I will just stick with my 264 WinMag. The Model 70 I have is very accurate and a true joy to shoot.
