GS bullets
Anyone have any experience or opinions on GS Custom Bullets made in South Africa? Or opinions on monometal bullets in general?

RJ,

I think that the easy way is to do a search for "GS". There have been several discussions recently that are very informative.

Bill,
I tried to do that prior to sending out the question, as I did not want to take up space to rehash any recent discussions. The search brought up many messages with various threads, but none of them contained anything with regards to GS bullets. Could you clue me in on where these might be located or any tips on using this particular search engine?

Thanks,
RJ

RJ,

I just typed in "GS custom bullets" and allowed it to search "all forums" and got 91 topics that concerned Gerard and his bullets. I will admit that you will have to read a little briskly since some of us get off topic occasionally. There is a current thread that William Tibbe (Kendall Dace) and Gerard get into some sparring which has some good information.

Also try the link that Gerard puts at the end of all his posts, it is an extremely informative site. www.gscustom.co.za
I just ordered mine 2 weeks ago so I have some time to wait before they get here. Look in the Reloading forum under "GS custom bullets" by Al Smith. It is about 2/3 way down from the top.

If this doesn't help, e-mail me and I'll do a sort for you.

Bill

I LOVE LOVE LOVE GS Custom Bullets. They consistently shoot 1/2 inch groups in my 470 capstick and they feed flawlessly.

What more can a guy ask?

I like them!

My theory is that Barnes shoot fairly well in top-quality custom barrels.

Every GS custom bullet I've tried drives tack from factory barrels, and this seems to be a common experience. I think it is the driving bands.

I have spent hundreds of $ trying to get Barnes X to shoot in factory barrels and never got groups reliably less than 1.5 inches.

My average group size for all loads all calibers of GS bullets has been .65 inches at 100 yards.

I've been itching to try the 173 HVs in my .300RUM but Gerard suggested I may want to try the 160s depending on the twist rate. I'll have to measure/calculate twist and get a new scope for the gun first.

Recon just how fast that RUM will push his little 130s

243 75 gr HV - Start with 40 gr Varget and work up to 3650 fps in 24" barrel.

300 RUM - 130 gr HV - start with 95 gr H4831 and work up to 3650 fps in a 24" barrel.

GS Custom has proven to be the most accurate hunting bullet I shoot. It gives improved velocity by up to 150 feet per second over other bullets. The solid is the best solid on the market today. This can be verified through other posts as Bill Tompkins suggested.

I have used the GS 160 8mm's and the 150? in my 300 H&H for deer and they all work perfectly with nice exit holes...They are extremely accurate bullets and they have high degree of quality control which Barnes does not have. Lots of Barnes failures out there on game if you investigate..

The GS flat nose solid is the most inovative and needed bullet to come down the pike in about a century and they do work on elephant, hippo and Buffalo. The FN solid works surprisingly well on plainsgame..

Can you explain what failure you have seen with the Barnes?? I like the idea of a bullet that can not shed it's jacket and has a large window of expansion. I have only used the Branes 45 cal bullets in 250 grn out of my muzzle loader. velocity is just over 2000 fps. Thye have worked better than several standard lead/jacket bullets, that I have tried in the inline. But have not used then in any centerfire rifle. I have a 25-06 that has a long throat and was looking into trying them. Due to the fact they recomend .45 thou to jump into the lands, which is the only way this rifle will shoot half way good groups.
