which 17hmr to get?
i was looking at the cheaper end of the 17hmrs, you know savage, marlin something like that. i dont care much about if its a wooden or plastic stock. but i would like the metal work to be stainless and would prefer a heavier barrel contour.

your thoughts?

I own both Marlin and Ruger...

For the money, I'd invest in a Savage or the CZ if I had to do it over again...

NEF (H&R) Sportster in 17HMR.

Heavy barrel, plastic stock, hammer extension and sight rail included, pretty good trigger and shoots pretty straight.
No stainless though and single shot only.

Oh, and did I mention CHEAP.
These rifles are excellent value IMO at less than $400aus

I have one of these.. It was $109.00 in the states when I bought mine... actually the single shot is great in conserving ammo!

And that NEW England plus the other one I have in 22 Mag, are both tack drivers...The 22 Mag shoots as well as the 17 HMR...
Get one, and the other barrel can be ordered and they are interchangable.. also can be ordered to be fitted with a 17 Mach 2 and a 22 LR barrel..

conserving ammo? its probably a good and a bad thing.if you needed a fast follow up shot if there was another animal beside the one you shot, a mag would be handy

I have a Henry Accu-bolt 17hmr. This is a single shot stainless/synthetic bolt gun. I wanted a short, durable "truck gun" for woodchucks and it works perfectly for that. It shoots 5-shot moa groups. The two things I don't like are the creepy trigger and the lack of a loading ramp.
