A buddy wants to get a .22 Hornet simply because his father owned one years ago and used to pop crows at the family farm in Oklahoma at 150 yards or so. Anyway, I told Johnie I'd look on the internet. I spotted a Savage 342 in .22 Hornet at a price Johnie can afford. Does anyone have any opinion about the Savage 342. I used to own a Savage 340 in .30/30, but at the time, was too young to care about groups or anything like that. If the bullet came out of the barrel and hit a six-inch tree a bit down the lane from me, I was a happy camper. So, does anyone know of the accuracy potential of the Savage 342 and especially in the .22 Hornet. I have no idea what the barrel twist is on this rifle. Thanks for any help fellas. Tom Purdom

I have a 342 in .22 hornet. The triger isn't great and mounting a scope is kind of a hassle because of the side mount. But accuracy is pretty good. With a 3-9 scope on it and reloads I can get about 1/2 moa. factory win ammo goes into about an inch. Since I have just got a new .223 I dont use the 22hornet much anymore.

For about $150 more I bet he could get a CZ 527 American in .22 Hornet. Having owned both, I can say that there is no comparison between the two. I love mine.

I bought a Stevens model 322A about two years ago. As far as I know, it's just the same as the Savage. I use 11.5 grains of IMR-4227 with the Sierra 40 grain Blitzking bullet and get tremendous ground-squirrrel accuracy.
I paid $140 for it and bought the B-Square mount for $45. The B-Square puts the scope above the bore, unlike the Weaver setup. I have an old steel Weaver V-7 on it and it is now my "go to" gun for scouting trips in the Owyhee mountains.
I will tell you that there is a drawback to the B-Square mount in that the scope mount is so high above the bore that you don't make cheek contact with the stock, it's more like "jaw-contact".
My buddy has the CZ in .223 and I don't give up anything to him within 200 yards!
