500grains"WORLDWIDE AMMUNITION SHORTAGE
Dear valued customer;
Due to world events, concerns over Iran, Avian Flu, and general global instability, ammunition is in short supply. Foreign and domestic suppliers have drastically increased prices and they cannot supply the quantity of ammunition necessary to meet consumer demand. Calibers that are ordinarily widely available have become uncommonly scarce. Currently, we do have .223 in stock, but even these supplies are nearly exhausted. We appreciate your patience and understanding in this unstable market.
Respectfully Yours, The Owners and Managers of Cheaper Than Dirt!"

NEJackInteresting. How about .224 bullets? I have a lot of brass stored up.
30 March 2007, 01:30
500grainsThe bulk bullets have largely dried up.

About the only bulk I see at a good price is in the April Midway flier. 55gr. PSPs. REM's w/c. $30.00/ 500. I'ved used these and they're OK. Not nearly as good as the Varmint Nite Mares.

lee440Damn 500! You mean I was not making all that up? Surely it cannot be so, as I went to Gander Mountain and they had five boxes of my favorite caliber, surely that is enough for everybody! Did CTD quote a source!?!

NEJackWell nuts.
I have about three hundred 60 gr VMAX already, and might have to get some more.
Interesting about the lead. I used to work at a place that used lead oxide, and the price kept going up because no one would dig it out of the ground.

lee440An update on the Black Hills ammo, I talked to a friend whose company is a direct buyer from Black Hills and he said they told him they were suspending production on their reloaded .223, but would produce new ammo. He said they cannot get any of the once fired military brass to keep that line in production. Here in Houston, the 52 gr. HP reload retailed around $18 per box of 50 and was very accurate, by having to use new commercial brass, I suspect there will be a significant price increase!

onefunzr2Sportsmans Guide has 84 separate listings for .223 ammo. I doubt that all 84 come up as out of stock.

N E 450 No2Someone told me today, a gun store employee, that there were bills in congress that would require a background check on a person if he was just buying a box of ammo.
Anybody heard about this???

I tried this at Cabela's and 90% did come up out of stock. At Midway most are marked "No Backorder" Plenty of Wolf around, for now.

Haven't heard this, but I have heard of Serial numbers on projectiles!

Now THAT'S ridiculous. I am surprised that I can mail order 100 lbs of gunpowder. Not arguing mind you, just a little surprised.

500grainsDon't believe everything you hear in gun stores. I once heard in a gun store that the U.S. government was using television signals to transmit AIDS to people who were enemies of the government.

Idaho SharpshooterCollins,
be happy you do not live in Illinois, you do there. they have a "FOI" Card, Firearms Owner's Identification Card that is required to buy even a box of 22 shells. My mother is 78 and won't move out here to Idaho (yet) and went to the store to get a box of 22's last spring and got turned down.
Sooo, she comes out here to visit and I send her home with a couple boxes...how stupid is that.

I'm guessing you can buy everything you need to reload BMG's without the card? Mailorder even?

Idaho SharpshooterYou cannot buy firearms, ammunition, or any components. Possession of said components is a class C felony, with up to three years prison time available.
Next question?

lawndartPending arrival of my ATF forms, I'm getting ready to spool up production of .223. What are you guys hankering for?? 55 grain fmj, 50 grain Ballistic Tip, or 69 or 77 grain HPBT match? Prices for the AR denizens will be lower than normal market prices for ammo of comparable quality. It will be available in either the once fired, or virgin case flavors.
If there is enough demand, I will make some 5.56 to NATO specifications with the 77 grain OTM bullet with a cannelure (i.e. identical to the M262 M1 ammunition).
Slightly OT, I will also have the equivalent (except more accurate) of the military M118 LR .308 sniper ammunition (175 grain Sierra HPBT). Again, it will be priced under the going rate for AR members.

Can you clarify that? In IL only? Where, Who? Why can't I buy brass? Who's making these silly rules?

Yes, I will be interested. Esp. in the milspec ammo, and a repro of the Win Lawman 55 gr ballistic load that cops in the south like to use.

NEJackIL has silly rules. Most of the Iowa gun stores require that you show you license just to prove you don't live in IL.

lawndartGot you covered Dan.
The above is why I left Illinois for Idaho!!!

Idaho SharpshooterWhat LD says!!
I think I beat him here, August 2nd, 1978 for me.
Talked to my mom the other day, and she sounds like she is ready to sell the family farm and make the move. The Granite City population is about to lose another senior citizen.
Go Mom!!!

lawndartYou beat me out of there by quite a bit Rich.
It took me a while to reach escape velocity, but I'm glad I did. Illinois itself has some pretty country (I don't mind flat, obviously), but... well, I'd best not get started.

CollinsBack on topic...
Gander Mtn. has shelves of .223 and even the bulk pack cases of Remington.
