Ruger African in .223

Yeah,I know it is considered impractical by some.

But I got one a few months ago.

Wow!!!

What a ton of fun to shoot.

And with handloads using 69gr SMK, it is a sub MOA rifle!!

Anyone else own one of these little bundles of joy?

I don't own one, but I would like to. Seems like a great practice gun and all around small bore in tandem with the Big bore Ruger African.

Ruger discontinued them this year. I had finally decided to get one and then 'Poof!' they were gone.

Found this one on GB from a real nice guy out west. After I got it, I emailed him a question about it and never got a response. A few weeks later, his widow answered my email, explaining he had died suddenly just a few days after shipping the rifle. Very sad. We had quite an enjoyable conversation on the phone before I bought it. We shared a love of guns and hunting, and a distain for Obama.

I finally bought one a few weeks back, warned that it wasn't a tack driver! I haven't scoped it yet, but it's a blast with 55gr pills so far!

I bought a left handed 223 Ruger 77 as my practice gun for a 375 Ruger M77. I shoot the 223 a lot. I had Docter red dots on both but will try scopes next. 1.2-6 Minox 30mm illuminated scopes.

I own one of these a well as the African Hawkeye in 9.3x62 and 375 Ruger. So, it's a nice practice rifle for those safari rifles, but for my other rifles as well. My wife and I had been using a Ruger 77/22 in 22LR, and it works well and is cheap to operate. However, it's size is too small to really replicate a full size safari rifle. The Ruger African in 223 solves that problem.

Of course, it's more expensive to run than the 22LR, but a lot less than DG rifles. We love ours and highly recommend it for practice.

Ruger does have the maddening habit of doing that. Like the Hawkeye SS in 35 Whelan with a 1-12" twist and the 350 Remington Mag. Course I can't b too mad at Ruger as I had a 350 and traded it off or maybe I sold it. Can't remember. But I wish I still had it now.
They discontinued the Hawkeye in 6.5 Creedmoor. That SERIOUSLY SUCKS!!! The Super Redhawk 7 1/2" in 480 Ruger. The regular 375 Ruger Alaskan which, while the Guide Gun is fully setup, there wasn't anything wrong with the 375+416 Alaskan's.
Then the guns they should come out with that they haven't. Like an 18" barrel GS Scout rifle in tan stainless in 6.5 Creedmoor an AR10 in 6.5 Creedmoor. A SS M77 Compact in 6.5 Creedmoor. All with 1-8" twist barrels. And a Guide Gun in 9.3×62 and 35 Whelan with 1-12" twist. And their striker fired autoloader in 10mm Auto.

Friend of mine just told me today that Ruger African sales are down so the .375 and .416 Ruger will now be offered in the Ruger American platform
They will call it the Ruger Afro-American....

I use a 1980s vintage Kimber .223 Custom Classic for the same purpose - I shoot it off sticks at various ranges for African hunting practice.

I'm not a SS and plastic person but I really like my boat paddle stock SS 223 of yesteryear, the same in a .338 Win. Nice gun for enclimate weather and pickup use..
