MartytWAny 376 Steyr based 'cats?
Just curious...
If a 284 based version will give '06 performance from '08 length, would the Steyr based version getter closer to the Mag performance? (I realize short mags might work better, but only if the rim size works in the bolt ...)

HunterJimMarty,
I saw some .30-.376 cases on a gunsmith's bench on a visit several years ago.
I expect there are more out there by now.
I also know that Steyr was thinking about a line of cartridges when they introduced the .376 Steyr.

if you're too busy to hunt, you're too busy.

tiggertateZ-Hat has done a couple including a 416, Marty.
Time to finish the EtronX, too. I can't get my privae messaging to work right now but you can PM me at htate@seaquestdivinglp.com and I'll get it sent where ever it needs to go.
Sorry to hijack the thread.
"Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

Do a search as someone here was playing with an 8mm version.

PlanemechI'd been thinking a .323-.376 might just be the cats meow in a light elk rifle.

boom stickwhy not just use a reg 376???
use cheap 220 gr 375 win flat nose bullets. $27 for 100
http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=727126if you MUST do a wildcat do a 358! light pistol bullets to 300 gr slammers..

I have been thinking the same thing. I have a nice 1910 mexican mauser action that would be a perfect match.

Rusty HookMy vote would go for a 9.3 on the Steyr case as being the most effective and potent round to use...Rusty.

PlanemechSee I was thinking a matte stainless CRF action, 24" Shilen, 3gray Mcswirly Sako pattern stock and 2.5x8x36 VX3 scope right at 8 lbs or so and throated to make maximum use of the 180 and 200 grain TSX's.
Any ballistics is 8mm-.376?

I would venture to guess 2800fps with the 200 gr.

MartytWSee, that's the whole problem. We are thinking on two similar but different tracks. You guys are thinking hunting large game, so .375, 3.323 (8mm), 9.3, etc sound great to you.
I am thinking long range hunting of 2-legged vermin and that requires VLD type projectiles, so either 338 or 30 cal. I was thinking of redoing an old 30-06 barrel in the 30 cal version of 9.3 x 64 Brenneke ... then thought that 30-376 Steyr in a .308 barrel might give me a smaller package with close enough results ...

BeartrackI used the .376 in my encore because short fat case gives good efficiency w/o the preasures of the WSM (which are hard on the encores).
If I was looking for a rifle in 8mm, I'd just get the .325 WSM. All the stuff on the .376 are sort of a "WSM LITE." They do more than the 06 based wildcats, but not as much as the magnums. Of course is the goal is to have a "Wildcat" then that changes everything.

biggy bigDoes somebody know the actual case capacity of the 376? I have found two sources one is 75gr the other is 80grs.
08 November 2006, 21:50
SlowHandIt's 80 grains.
08 November 2006, 21:55
SlowHandSomeone on this board has a .338-376 steyr improved. I have a picture of it. Looks like a neat cartridge.
09 November 2006, 01:06
biggy bigSo at 80 grains it is roughly the same capacity as the WSM's. So would the ballistics not be pretty much the same? (i.e. a .323/376 would have the equivalent ballistics as a 325 WSM.)
Like I said earlier I am looking for a good elk cartridge for a 1910 Mexican mauser. From what I can see a .323/376 would work better than a 325 WSM in this action.

Rusty HookIf you want high velocity, flat trajectory, great wind bucking ability and low recoil, why not neck the Steyr to 6.5? It should be a little more potent than a 6.5 x 284 but not as overbore as a 264 Winchester Magnum...Rusty.

Can you Email them?
13 November 2006, 10:23
SlowHandJust remember that when you neck the 376 down to 323 you will lose 3 to 4 grains of capacity, so it will be a little less capacity than the 323 WSM.

300stwgive me an email address i will send them.
