270 gibbs
Please could some one tell me what are the real time velocity's with this cartridge with a 130gr bullet over a 270 win and would these be obtainable with a 22" barrel. Or rather would I be wasting my money re-chambering a 22" barrel.

Probably a waste.

Yep but when you hang a mod on the end a 26 " becomes 32"

I haven't played with a 270 Gibbs in years. But I've burned a lot of powder testing my 280PDK which would be a 7mmGibbs plus about two grains of capacity. Little less taper and 40deg.

What I found in all my testing loaded to as close to the same pressure as I could I would see a 1% velocity for 4% capacity. A gibbs is about 7% larger so figure 50-75fps.

So if you lose 25-35fps per inch in the 270 then a 270 Gibbs in a 22" would equal a 270Win in a 24".

I would never recommend someone go to the Gibbs or even my PDK simply for the small velocity gain.

If you feel you need a 22" if it were my $$ I would leave it as a 270Win. Load a slightly compressed load of MRP or RL22 anticipate a velocity in the 3100+(maybe) range and go hunting. Nothing you would ever shoot would feel a 50fps difference.

Now if you are like me and want to be different go with the gibbs. Or talk to wayne at AHR and think about a 270Howell. Brass, dies etc available from him. Again more to be different than velocity gain.

As usual just my $.02

Thanks ramrod
I like the idea of something different and it would stop my brother helping himself to my rounds! I was looking at the 270 Howell as well but could't work out if it would fit in the mag.
Even though I've always hand loaded I've never had anything but common cartridges.
Which case takes less work to form?
Also who is AHR I'm in the UK

The 270 Howell has the same OAL as the 270Win. The Howell has a 30geg vs 35 of the Gibbs. Taper about the same. Brass is 2.6". Howell and Gibbs have about the same net capacity. If your magazine would allow a longer OAL then I would set the chamber up for as long as your mag would hold and take advantage of the longer neck.
