sakorick35 Whelen
I will have my 35 Whelen ready for test fireing in a month or so.....any load recommendations welcome. Commercial Mauser action with a 25 inch Wilson med. sporter barrel. Regards, Rick.
John Deer tractors and Sako rifles....just doesn't get much better.

HHI6818Hi Sakorick,
Its not a Whelen but wanted to share this. I have a 12 inch Encore barrel chambered in 35-06 JDJ. I shoot the Hornady 250gr Spire Point @ 2100FPS. The brake is really effective and recoils isnn't that bad.

CrazyhorseconsultingI am using 53.0 grains of either IMR 3031 or IMR 4064, behind a 225 grain Barnes X Flat Base bullet. I notice very little difference in the performance of the two loads. My Whelen is a Ruger Model 77, Tang Safety that I had the 22 inch barrel replaced with a 26 inch medium sporter weight.
Even the rocks don't last forever.

DuaneinNDGet yourself a jug of RL 15 and you will find a good load in most reloading manuels.

Paul HWork up to 58 gr RL15 or Varget under a 250 gr cup core ie hornady or speer, in a 25" tube you should be 2500+ fps and good groups. With a 225 ie sierra you can work up to 60gr for 2700+fps.
The partition type bullets run higher pressures and peak charges will require less powder. I've seen the same charge under a 250 hornady clock 100 fps faster when loading a 250 gr swift a-frame.
I prefer fed 210 primers.

sakorickHello Paul. Varget ranks #115 in the slowest chart, RL 15 ranks 134. IMR 4064 comes in at 120. I have 5 pounds on hand so I might as well start there. Thanks for the input....OBTW, I have chronied Winchester, CCI, Rem and Fed non-mag primers in identical loads with no significant change in MV's in at least 6 different calibers. I have also worked with magnum primers in a 7Mag and 300 Winney vs reg primers with no significant difference. If I lived up North I would sure use them!
Please note...this is an Ackley..... not sure what the case/rifle might like. The RL15 just might be the trick...we'll see. Regards, Rick.

Paul HRemember that the powder burning rate charts are relative, not absolute. Hence in a paticular chambering, powders rates as slower may actually perform as a faster powder than a powder that is rated as faster.
In the 35 whelen Varget and RL 15 are nearly interchangable.

Ackley was a proponent of a longer neck, my 'smith learned from Parker Otto Ackley, himself. And Rocky Gibbs was out long before JDJ.
