wmwiseNewbie needs some advice
Hey guys, New to the wildcat game, but want to give it a try. I have a extra rifle in .223 with a 24", 1-12 twist heavy barrel, long action. Thinking of having it rechambered to one of these calibers. But want something that will be easy to start with, and will work with the 12 twist. What do ya,ll think of the......
22-243
22-308
22-284
is there any others that I need to consider?
Bolt face will not be a problem, it is a Savage 112 and I can change the bolt head real easy.
Looking for something that will be easy to find load data, easy to form brass ect.
Any info ro opions will be very helpful.
Thanks
Bill

In addition to rechamber as you mentioned you will need to alter the bolt face.
The 1in12 (are you sure of the twist I was just on the Savage site and they showed most 223s with a 1 in 9)will limit you to the shorter lighter bullets. 60-62 grs and lighter. Maybe less depending on the shape. The 22-243 and 22-308 are the same round. Using a 308 case is just more work. My opinion (that an a couple $$ would buy you coffee) the 22-284 would be way to overbore with the lighter bullets.
The 224TTH and 224Clark are other option using the 6mm case. Again a lot of capacity for light bullets.
With your twist I would look real heavy at the 22BR (basically a shortened 243/308 case). Get 6mmBR Lapua brass for about $54/100 run in a die and off you go. NEVER MIND THE 22BR WOULDN'T CLEAN UP THE 223 CHAMBER.

Since the 243Win itself is essentially a 6mm-08
a 22 based on a 308Win is redundant.
The 284Win case has essentially the same case capacity as an '06 case.
Being honest about it there isn't a whole lot a bigger case can do that can't already be done
with a 22-250 or a 220Swift.
Though a fast twist 22-250 should be interesting to play with....

I'm looking into something like this(Maybe .22-250 AI)...Most .22-250s have slower twists, but I want to use heavier bullets.
