400 Pondoro
Could anyone give me some info on this cartridge, the 400 Pondoro? What action will it work in?Are operating pressures high? How about different loads and velocities?I tried doing a search on the net and here and pretty much came up with nothing. My Cartridges of the World book doesn't have it listed.

Get yourself a copy of A-squares Any Shot You Want loading manual. I've always thought of Cartridges of the World as one of the poorest references on cartridges, and often frought with errors. If you like big boomers, get A-squares book as well as Wolf Publishings Big Bore Rifles and Loads (title?) it is a compilation of Rifle and Handloader articles on the bigger rounds.

This should give you a "mental picture":
Base diameter: 0.532"
Length to shoulder: 2.292"
Shoulder diameter: 0.496"
Shoulder angle: 27 degrees
Neck diameter: 0.436"
Neck length: 0.460"
Case length: 2.810"
COL: 3.650
Projectile diameter: 0.409"
Wonder why they didn't just put together a 416 Taylor that shoots 0.409 projectiles? Seems like a "neater" idea.
Cheers...

The .400 Pondoro appears to be, in essence, a .416 Rem Mag necked down to take .410-.411 bullets, thus making it practical to shoot inexpensive cast or jacketed .41 mag pistol bullets for easy-recoil practice.

The downside is that the choices in .416 diameter projectiles seem much greater than in .410 diameter.

400 grains at 2350 to perhaps 2400 would be expected in a heavy game load. Any Shot lists a 210 Nosler handgun bullet at 3100+. That ought to launch a groundhog into orbit!
