Making 338-06 cases from 30-06
Is this a simple neck up in a 338-06 sizer die? I don't really want to mess around with neck turning, etc. Is there any of that involved in making 338-06 cases? [Confused] Weatherby cases are crazy expensive.

Todbartell,

My 338-06 is the Ackley version, but I just neck 30-06 cases up to 338 and fireform them. The answer to your question is, yes, just neck them up from 308 to 338...or just full length resize with your 338-06 die, trim (probably won't need to except maybe to square and uniform each batch), and chamfer, then load.

Good Hunting,

I start with 35 Whelen brass and neck it down to 338-06. This just requires one pass through a 338-06 full-length sizing die -- just exactly the same as if I were starting with 338-06 brass and full-length sizing it.

My buddy and I each have a .338-06, for which we reload. He fireformed cases from .30-06 brass and I just used the sizing die to form my cases. Both ways worked fine.

What BB said. It is much simpler to use 35 whelen brass & you don't end up with a short case.

I spoke with A-Square the other day about getting factory 338-06 brass for my rifle. The new owner said it should be available mid-July for about $50/100. All of their manufacturing equipment has been updated for quality control and they are filling back orders for their big stuff now. Call them at (812) 283-0577.

Making .338-06 cases from '06 cases is one of the easiest of reloading operations. After lubing the inside of the case neck, neck size the case in the resizing die. Once fired cases should be trimmed to a uniform length. I trim just enough to square the end of the case. My rifle is a rebored Pre-64 Model 70 originally chambered for the .30-06. It's a great elk rifle with 210 Nosler Partitions my bullet of choice.

With my improved verson of this cartridge, I favored 270 Winchester brass, which gave better head space "feel". I liked the tightness the 270's shoulder area would give when fire-forming. ~~~Suluuq
