Sabot8MM Rides again
The advent of the 325 Winnie has me looking at 8MM as a good filler between the .308 and .338 calibers. There are a lot more good bullets out there than I thought. Necking up any 30 cal to .323 gives an energy boost equal to a 10% increase in case capacity, the goal of many AI versions on 30s.
This leads one to thinking that an 8mm-08 (8X51)could have enough advantages over the 308 win to justify the change. It would basically overcome the gap between the 308 and the '06 with heavy bullets, up to a 220 RN at an honest 2400 fps in a 22 inch bbl. The varmint capabiltiy would be retained with the 8mm 125 grainer approaching 3300 fps.

The good ol' 8x57JS already nicely handles all of that. Unless, you just want to put a 8mm-08 in a true short action. Of course, there's nothing wrong with having something a bit different so if you want a 8mm-08 then do it.
I've been fooling around with my Rem Model 700 Classic in 8x57 and I have been pleased with it so far. S&B factory 196 gr SPCE ammo goes out the muzzle at around 2640 fps for around 3000 foot pounds of muzzle energy. Not too shabby.

Brenneke makes a load for the 8X57 with a 198gr bullet @ 2740fps

SabotThen there is the 8mm-06 AI...3550 FPE and bullet weights from 125 to 250 grains. What the heck can't you hunt with that?

Don't get
ME started on the 8mm-06 Ackley!

Every bit as good as the 300 Win Mag, perhaps better with bullets of 200gr-250gr.
