Ackley Improved UserReloading the .338-06 Ackley Improved - please share your experience.
According to Quick Load, it is possible to achieve 2900 fps with 225 gr. Accubond bullets using ~69 grs. of Normal MRP, a 26.5" barrel, and keeping PSI limited to 65,000 - 2800 fps with the Accubond 250 gr. bullet. Do you think this is possible?

ramrod340For a 225 Z-hat doesn't claim it from the 338Hawk. Nor did the data I had for the 340 Howell. Rocky had 2850 for max in the 338Gibbs. All three have more capacity than the 338-06AI. Loadtech shows 2920 from a 225 in a 338Wmag and 26".
I didn't get it from my 340PDK(slightly larger than the gibbs) but I have a 24" and never used MRP in it.

Ackley Improved UserRam,
I'll find out since I'll be getting a 338-06 AI (26.5" barrel) soon; and, I have lots of MRP. With my 30-06 AI Quick Load has been quite close in its predictions, but you never know until you try.
Thanks for your comments, I really appreciate it.
Regards, AIU

ramrod340Good luck.

Norma brass gives me about 3grs more capacity in my 280 based wildcats. Some would have issue with it because it normally starts expanding the head around 65-67000 from my pressure work years ago. I use it kind of as a heads up. I know when I'm reaching my comfort zone.

MTMI had a 338-06 IMP a while ago. It had a fairly short neck ( bigger cap. than an Ackley ) I could get 2800 with 225s and 2700ish whith 250s. Believe me, these were all out loads. Don't think that case could possibly go any faster and hold primers.

tiggertateI agree that those velocities are unlikely. Mine shoots 200 gr Balistic Tips at 2880 all-out. I use a compressed load of Rel 19 to get the 200 gr cooking; I always thought MRP was the same powder as Rel 22 and I can't get those velocities with Rel 22.
But I have an unopened can of MRP and I'll see if I can get close. My barel is 25.5 inches.
