Dreadnoughts and Whispers
Does anyone actully own and shoot one of the JDJ Dreadnaughts, mini-drednaughts, micro-dreadnaughts or the bigger Whispers. I haven't seen any discussions on these cartridges here or on Shooter's. The only data seems to be on the SSK web page and in COTW.

I shoot a 50 BMD short, it is the same as JD Jones SSK 500 Whisper ( a 460 WM cut to 2" with .510 slug)
I do not have much experience with it yet, I'm loading 50BMG slugs and having a ball.

SS,
I shoot a .300 Whisper in a Contender, but no supression system. Just a vanilla Bullberry 13" barrel. Fun to shoot and a lot less recoil than my other barrel in .30-30. I haven't hunted with it, yet. Bagged a lot of paper though.

I shoot the 510 whisper in an encore barrel. It is based on the 338 lapua case cut down to 1.885". Nasty recoil.

Ranb,
A .510 Whisper sounds odd, doesn't it. A .510 Yell might be more appropriate. Does your Encore have the sound suppression stuff? Do you load it sub-sonic?

ranb,
Does your cartridge headspace on the case mouth? I guess that would be FUN in an Encore as long as one doesn't let the hammer get buried in one's forehead.

I've shot a buddies 300 whisper, and he's also played with the 338 whisper (7mm br necked up) and 510 American Eagle (50 ae with .510" bore) Do a web search for quarterbore.com it has 300 whisper data.

I've been meaning to do build a rifle chambered for the 45 acp to see how quiet a non supressed round can be by using heavy bullets and light charges of fast powders. I would expect a 300-350 gr cast bullet @ 700 fps to be a respectable game cartridge at closer ranges, yet have a mild report.

ranb,
Curious about the headspace too. What's the diameter and angle of the shoulder, I assume it works fine?

<ranb>
Case is a 338 lapua cut down to 1.885". Headspace is on the shoulder. Shoulder is very small and cut into the case as the neck is turned down from about .023" to about .011". The shoulder is tiny, but entirely adequate for the job. I think the angle is about 45 degrees. The diameter just below the shoulder is .565". Fired neck outside diameter is .537". This makes the shoulder only .014" wide. [Smile]

I only shoot subsonic. That is punishing enough in a light weight rifle like the encore. I have heard others who shoot it in a trg-s action do not complain about recoil. I filled the stock with #5 lead shot to make things a bit easier on me especially when I shoot 950 grain cast bulets in it. Scoping myself is not a problem when using a good scope with lots of eye relief. I use a Premier Reticle Leupold 4.5-15x50 with a custom mil-dot reticle. It has 24 mil-dots on the vertical portion so I can zero at 400 yards and use the dots to hold on between 200 to 600 yards without making scope adjustments. Still working on a range chart.

The gun does roar like any other center fire cartridge using 30 grains of powder. I hope to get it down to 125 db after I get the suppressor made. I have yet to send in the form 1 to the BATF yet. Still working on the 300W can for now.

I decided to go the Fifty-way too , but at a somewhat easier route : 50/70 Govt in a 16" barrel , a 580gr. cast bullet in front of 42 gr. N120 and you`re lucky if you can stop it in front of your nose.I shoot a Contender in 444 Marlin and 45/70 , just in case you think I can`t handle recoil , but this .50 is cheap to make and has more punch than most people can handle, looks sexy too !I`ll try subsonic loads soon , haven`t had the time to try yet. The 45 ACP idea sounds great. I once corresponded with a fellow who built such a rifle and he noted that he prefered a tight chamber: I assume to assure a good seal. I don't recall what weight of bullets he used but I could send him a link to this discussion.

Would Lyman's .451 "volunteer" (450gr) in a 45 Colt be in this same league? I have some to paper-patch in my 45-70 and maybe as a 450 Mongo heavy. I recall an article where someone was casting 500gr wadcutters for 454 Casull in the 96 Handloaders Digest....

Clark,

Member #1? I never knew. I think I was asking about stuff on the NEF or a Marlin Talk thread when you gave me that 45 info. I would not have been so vague in reference to you had I known. Small world.
