A friend braught the fact to my attention that there is a large gap, calibers missing from the .375(.374 or something) through to .401.

As far as I can see, there are no gaps this big between the calibers from .17 to .375.

No one has ever come out with a .390 or .385.

We got to talking about how cool such a cartridge would be based on a .375H&H or the .416rem or maybe the 404Jeffries or .416Rigby, .505gibbs or....

Any thoughts?

The ove-40 crowd, up to the smaller 45's, all do the same thing.
The 375's serve very well for an "almost 40," so I'm not sure what practical hole there is, even if there's a mathematical one.
But one could argue that 8mm, 338, 348 and 358 are all so close as to be redundant.
So, if you want a .385-8mm Remington, it would certainly perform just great, assuming you had the bucks to pay for a new bore-size setup at the barrel shop, and a small run of custom Partitions!

The gap from .375 - .401 is .026" and the next biggest gap I've notied is .284 - .308 which is .024". I've been thinking about a .296 caliber for years, but could never figure out a use for it.

For our friend in large bore land I have no easy solution to get a barrel, however. Focus on the dream some times rather than the resulution of it. There is nothing wrong in the joy of the dream by itself.
As I grow older filling a gap isn't as important as it once was. roger
