Hello to all.

".22 Lovell 2R" is my only wildcat. Yes its hard to find old "25-20 Single-Shot" brass but have been fortunate.(found 70 last fall cheap!). Did not see any others in posting response, but would like to hear from anyone regarding Lovell 2R or the .22-3000 (similar). This includes pet loads or literature(ie magazine articles). It was a hot varmint caliber in the 1930's but the .222 came out after WW2 and I believe a lot of rifles got rechambered as not many seem to be left.
Have a great year.

Jaguar,

There are a couple of pages on the R-2 Lovell by Ken Waters in "Wildcat Cartridges" published by Wolfe Pub. in Prescott, Arizona. This essay may also be in Waters Pet Loads but I did not look. As usual there is no loading data from Waters but the article is very informative on the history of the cartridge which is his strength.

If you ever see any books by Charles Landis buy them as they are filled with lore on varmint shooting in the 30's thru the 40's. Of course the R-2 was a hot item then and it gets a lot of press. Landis was an engineer and therefore is quite precise. He hunted woodchucks up into Ontario also.

I had R-2 on a nice Ballard but it had too much headspace so I returned it. Also my favorite varmint rifle was a R-2 but as you mention was rechambered to .219 Improved Zipper.

Another book to look for is Speers Reloading Manual for Wildcat Cartridges #4. It has loads for both the .22/3000 lovell and the R-2 version.

What with the great accuracy and ballistic coefficients of the new plastic tipped 40 gr bullets perhaps you have tried them? It seems that 3600 fps might be possible with a burning rate like IMR 4227. Overall I am sure you are avoiding top loads however to make the cases last.

The R-2 was a nice sized cartridge and similar in capacity to todays .221 Fireball.

Thanks for reply Savage99. I am currently looking for a copy of Water's and Landis' articles. Also looking for June 1937 and Jan 1938 issues of American Rifleman on E-bay, which I'm sure will eventually turn up. Yes I have tried the Hornady V-Max and they do shoot well but have not bettered the Hornady Hornets (.223" dia.) for accuracy and speed. I'm kind of restricted by a tight English bore (no not my wife..ha ha) and also a 14" twist both of which seem to jump pressures a little high as I get to 3000 fps. It's a toss-up so far between 4198 and 4227 but have managed 5 shots in one big hole at 100 yds. using the 4227 at reduced speed of about 2700 fps. Cases are blowing the heads right off if I use much heavier loadings of the 4227. I can compact a full case with the 4198 and reach over the 3000 fps mark without sacrificing cases however, but slightly less accurate. I know it's pretty tame, but it is fun trying to wring all I can out of a 75 year old gun. Any other powder suggestions to try? (p.s. I also have a 99 in .300 savage that is a great old gun with open sights at 200 yds. with cheap factory crap. I'm going to be reloading for it soon as well ....any favourite loads?) Bye for now.

Same as fellow Canadian Snowman:

P-14 .303 British rechambered with a .300 Winchester Magnum reamer to yield a ".303-300 Win. Mag." Simply turn the case necks down by .003 and load like any .300 Win. Mag. but use .303 bullets instead of .30s.

585 Gehringer, again, finally. Looking for someone else to do it though.I'm a self confessed puller of triggers only-my idea of reloading is filling up a magazine.

Just two, so far. A 6X45mm, and 6mm-284. I am not fond of recoil and these two are quite nice to shoot, albeit for different purposes most of the time.

I have a .257 Ackley Imp. and a .338-06. With these 2 rifles I feel I could hunt all big game in North and South America. Both are very efficient and balanced. Both are built on Pre-64 M70 Winchester actions and custom stocked. They are also very accurate with Nosler Partitions. A lot of game has been taken with both of them without fail. I've owned the .257 AI since 1969 and the .338-06 since 1982. Wonderful cartridges! [Wink]

I dont reload anything YET. I have a 358STA that I'm in the middle of building. Hopefully someday before long I'll start reloading for it. Basically, its a good bedding job and stock paint away from complete. Probably should be reloading for the std calibers I do have in the mean while. [Roll Eyes]
