willimon1Ackley?
I have a remington 700 s/a that is in need of a new barrel. I have a hs stock with the varmint contour and was thinking about going ackley with this. What has the greater gains 243ai or the 22/250ai?

Probably the 22-250. The 243 already has
minimum body taper and the only thing an AI does is increase the shoulder angle. That doesn't result in much capacity gain.
But, the two cartridges serve two different purposes and it's not really fair to compare them. Make it into a switch-barrel and get both.

the jiggerThe 250/3000 (parent of the 22-250) ranke third on the list of percentage of improvement when Acklied. I shoot a 250AI. Of the two you mention I would choose the 22-250AI and I would go with a faster twist than the traditional 1 in 14.
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!

plainsman456if you are going to shoot heavy bullets go with 1-8 or 9 twist if not the starndard twist will blow up varments with the cheaper bullets if there are any.Good Luck

Idaho Sharpshooterthere's a phrase: "go big or go home!". Why not do a 6mm-284 or a 22-284. I have the 22 version, and those wicked 80gr Sierra MKs run 3600fps from a 28" barrel. Either is easy these days, now that we have 6.5-284 brass available.

Bohica25 Souper or the AI version!! Both are great. I built a 25 Souper many years ago in Hawai`i and one night here in Oregon got creative and backed the barrel in a few .000s and made it into an Ackley Improved version. [New Years Eve and sounded like a good idea] The darn thing actually shoots BETTER!! Would you believe? And it was a good MOA rifle to start.

tom hollandI own both 22-250AI has a Shilen 1/12 twist barrel 243AI has a Hart 1/10 twist barrel.
I was surprised by the gains with the 243AI so I'd vote for the 243AI.
