Ian,
Another possibility is to neck up the 8mmX57 to 338 or take it one step further and obtain a 338x57 MAI(Mauser Ackley Improved), a cartridge that a fellow experimenter in Alaska and I designed. Reamers for either cartridge can be obtained from Dave Manson of Manson Reamers. He did the reamer for the 338x57 MAI. The 57mm cases lend themselves well to functioning thru the M48 action as it was designed originally for the 8mm Mauser cartridge. Good luck in your endeavor whichever cartridge you decide on.

You landed on the obvious. I was shying away from the '06 based cartridges because of magazine length issues. When I looked at the oal of the 308 based cartridges this afternoon, they seemed to waste mag space. I could do better. How about necking the 8x57 even larger to 358? I'm sure it's been done before given the number of surplus mausers out there.
Do you have any ballistic data for your creation that I can browse?
thanks,
Ian

DPhillipsThe 338-08 has been done, but is still a wildcat. A 308 necked up to 35 cal is the 358 Winchester. The 358 Hawk is an improved version of the 35 Whelen, with the shoulder moved forward a little and the case blown out.
