I have an 8x57 mauser that has what appears to be a rather clean barrel (no pitting etc) and want to do something with it. I have a 7x57AI and am not looking to do the same with the 8x57. I was contemplating a .323 Hollis, or possibly maybe a 8mm-.300 WSM. Anybody have any thoughts? Or should I say anybody have any thoughts they care to share?

I was looking for something a little more exotic, although the 8mm06AI isn't a bad choice.

today realy exotic is 8x75S, maybe you know the 8x75RS this is the rimless version.
you change 9,3x74 R or 8x75RS brass on a latheand give them the 8x57IS groove dia.
A very powerfull cartridge!

How about a 8x64. A 7x64 Brenneke necked up.

How about the RUM brass cut to 06 length and necked to 8mm. Should about equal the performance of the 8mm Rem mag?

I believe you can just clean up the chamber with a 8mm X 284 if u r looking for something unique. 8mm06 is probably much more practical if OAL is not a problem.

Go with the Hollis you will never regret it.

Leave it exactly as it is and enjoy it. Its a great caliber if you reload.

Sounds like one to leave as-is, to me. But I understand where you're coming from. I'd also second the '06 suggestion, since it really does give great performance (or maybe the AI of it.)
The WSM case would definitely smoke, especially if you throated it out to what that magazine could handle (assuming you were going to shoot bullets long enough to make it worthwhile.)
You might reconsider the 8x57 AI, for a matched pair.

How about an 8mm-338 Win. Works thru the Mauser
action with a little rail work and bolt face
opening. COL is no problem.

And how about an 8mm MAZON, a 9,3x64 Brenneke case necked down to 8mm.
Case is 64mm long, or 2.52" and will fit in you action with no major modifications.
It does not have a belt, and capacity is virtually identical to any 2.5" magnum case.
Besides all, it is a case.

Your choice may depend on how much work you want to do on this (ie how many $ do you want to spend?).Minimal work and expense either the 8mm-06 or the improved version will be hard to beat. If you want more power either the 323 Hollis or the 8mm PMM (poor mans magnum 8mm/338) are nearly identical. I would chose the 8mm PMM because 338 brass is easier to obtain than 308 Norma brass and a lot cheaper! Some of the short fat calibres are interesting but your going to have trouble making them feed. Some of the european calibres are great (8x68) but brass is expensive and at times difficult to come by. Just remember when you get it built you have to feed it!

8X68s or a 8mm Gibbs. Ive thought about a 8mm/350 RM for something different that would fit in a M-48. Dunno how well it would feed though.
