At a gunshow recently I saw one of these chamered in a Ruger #1. The round they had displayed looked like it came from the short/fat magnum school of thought. I'm used to seeing the 50cal elephant cartridges so this one looked short in relation.

Can anyone elaborate on the ballistics of this round? Any "real world" advantage over 45-70? Sure the bullet's fatter, but how fast is it going, and at what pressures? Will rifle bullets still leave enough powder space? Is it even possible to stabilize pistol bullets in a 22 or 24" barrel with a twist meant for rifle bullets?

I ask this last question because I think some of the accuracy issues I've had with a lever-action 44Mag are due to incompatible twist rate.

Anyway, any info would be appreciated. I thought it was a little bizarre at first, but then "rational" doesn't really apply to wildcatting and re-chambering.

Isn't the 500 L off the 45-70 case? Or maybe it's the 348.
Anyway, "real world benefits" would be hard to discern I'm sure.
Who would do that to a Ruger #1, when it can be chambered in 50-110 just as easy?

The 500 Linebaugh is based on the 348W, trimmed to 1.5inches. The Long/Max is trimmed to 1.610inches.
