6.5 carcano-or X 54 w/.220 swift case?
This thought was driven by the 6.5 X 54 IMP thread.

Has anyone built or have had built a rifle chambered for the Carcano or Mannlicher using .220 Swift cases with the bolt to work with the .473 rim diameter? This would be a sweet marriage of a standard bolt face and a couple of dandy cartridges. Dies and reamers already exist and both cartridges could be hand loaded to pressent day acceptable pressures.

I've used the Carcano successfully on a number of very large mule deer.

Please let me know if anyone has gone down this road before. Thanks Roll Eyesroger

Clymer's web site shows the 6.5x52 Carcano as having a base dia.of .451 with a freebore dia. of .268,the pilot dia. is.255 which is correct for the .256/.264 barrel. The freebore of .268 is in my opinion excessive for a .264 bullet.

The 6.5x54 MS reamer print gives.4535 as the base dia.,a freebore of .263,and a pilot dia. of
.251.

My 6.5 and 7.35 Carcano ammo measures .4465-.447 base dia.,my .220 Swift ammo measures .4417-.442 base dia.

The .220 Swift case is a bit small for making either the Carcano or MS cases in my opinion.

If I was wanting a small capacity 6.5 that fit the .473 boltface, it would be the .260 Rem.

Thanks WC. I was a little surprised at the size of the 220 swift's measured head diameter as the written info I was going by list the Carcano and the Swift within .001". I was also surprised of the Carcano reamer's head diameter. I share your opinions about this errant quest except for the .260 and that has no part in my life. Frownerroger
