.35-300 Savage. ???
Anyone hear of a worn out 300 Savage bored to a 358? Seems like it might make slightly more velocity than a 35 Remington. It should salvage a bad bore for some lonely little Savage 99. Thanks for your thoughts. Packrattusnongratus

I have never seen a .300 Savage necked up to .35 caliber
or a reamer offered for that wildcat,although someone has probably done it.

The .300 Savage has a water capacity of 51.42 grs.the
.35 Rem. has a water capacity of 51.76 grs.,by the time the .300 Savage was necked to .358 the capacity would be almost identical to the .35 Rem.

The .300 Savage has a case length of approximately 1.870
,while the .358 Win case is about 2.010 in length.These measurements were taken from factory ammo.

The .300 Savage also has a very short neck.

Remember also,if the gun has a rotary magazine it would have to be opened up for the larger dia .bullet.

I think you would be best to look at the .358 Winchester.

The .308 is merely an improved .300 Sav. They lengthened the neck and straightened the sides of the .300, which are things that are beneficial to the .35 loading. The only problem I can see would be feeding from the rotary mag. It might be worthwhile to talk to a smith, or to try to load .308's or .358's into the existing magazine (and have the action remove them).

hey PR,
I think it would work, but plan on 35 rem ballistics... or get a take off barrel and replace this one.

the 358 win is based off the 308 case, which, unless you've got a fairly modern 99, is not exactly the same action and will be an endless hassle to try and rework to 358 win.

short answer, get a new barrel, longer answer, get a new barrel is 250 sav, longest and hardest answer, go a 35x300 sav... you could email dave@ch4d.com and see if he's heard of it

I imagine you'd get around 2200 fps with a 225 grain bullet. You can get 2400 with the 358 (or a little more) with the same bullet.

The Handloaders Manual of Cartridge Conversions lists the .300 Savage as having a water capacity of 51.42 grs ,while the .308 Win. has a capacity of 54.07 grs.

I've got most of a box of range pickupo brass.. that is 300 sav fired in a 308... about .220" high neck or so

Thanks. That's very interesting! I shoot the .35 Remington but not the .300 Savage or .308 Winchester. I can move the 180 from the .35 about as fast as factory claims to move it from the .300 (about 2400 fps) but that is a "warm" load in my guns. Now I see why! Just hadn't noticed before...

Sir: The 300 Savage necked up to .35 has a version called the 35 IHMSA. By A fellow named Gates, I think. You can find more in "Cartridges of the World".

Thanks guys. I was thinking that the old barrel bored to 358 would salvage the old barrel. It already fits! Not trying to get a 358 WCF out of a 300 Savage. I already have a Series A 99 in that cal. Some good thoughts here. Thanks again. Packrattusnongratus

The .35 Rem. is loaded to a SAAMI MAXIMUM pressure of
35,000 C.U.P. The pressure is held low to accomadate rifles such as the Rem. 08.

.356 Win.&.358 Win.are SAAMI MAX. 52,000 C.U.P.

.300 SAVAGE is SAAMI MAX. 46,000 C.U.P.

The .356 Win.was produced on the Marlin 336 action and
the .358 Win.was chambered in the Model 99 Savage.

In strong actions the .35 Rem.can be loaded to about the same pressures as the .356 or .358 Win.
