6,5-08?

6,5-08?
Hello wildcatters.
Im new to wildcats but i have here a sako forester cal,243win that i want to change a littlebit!

I was thinking rebarreling it to 6,5-08 maybe even ackley version of it!

What do you think is a good barrel lenght for it and can i use ,243 cases to neck up and blow out for ackley?
Just that i have a bunch of ,243 cases and would like to use em?

I have a 260 Rem, aka 6.5-08, and yes the 243 case can be used for either the regular 260 Rem or the 260 Ack.

Jim Carmichael made a cartridge a called the 6,5 panther also known as 6,5-08 or 260 rem.

Well, in the case which you imagined above, he would rather be using a 6,5x58 R Danish Krag, wouldn't he ?

What - you want to insinuate that you have improved since 1648 ?
You know, we still harbour resentments here in Germany from the times of Swedish invasion and occupation - 't was worse than the US Army in Iraq, I tell you !

Actually, I know Germans who thinks that Danish or Norwegian is much harder to understand. Neither uses the don't use letters like ���, which we do

I have a 260 AI and I don't think you can go wrong with a 22" barrel. Mine is 24" and I'm thinking real hard about having it cut to 22". My guess is roughly 40fps between the two lengths and I would prefer the handling/balance of the 22" barrel.

My whitetail load last fall was 50.0g of H-4350 behind a 100g Partition at 3,340fps. I would never be able to detect the difference 40fps makes in the field.

The original "wildcat" I first heard about that was the .308 Winnie necked to .264 or 6.5mm, was the .263 Express developed in part by Ken Waters. P. O. Ackley even included this 'wilkdcat' cartridge in his two-volume series on reloading all types of catridges.

I generally like Jim Carmichael as a gun writer, as he is a writer who's a "doer" and actually reports on his experiences (been there and really done it!), but it amazes me Carmichael gets all the credit for inspiring the .260 Remington and Waters is never mentioned!

Where did you get dies for your .260 AI? If you were doing it again, would you go with the same caliber, or the 6.5-284?

I made a 6.5/243 imp long before the 260 became legit.
Mine has a 23" barrel, just as a compromise, but a 22" would be plenty. I use 120's for deer and Re 19 gives me 3120 fps. I have a 6.5/284 on a mauser. With a 24" barrel and the bullets seated way out, I gain only 100 fps over the 260 imp. I havent used 140's in either, but suspect thats where the 284 case would gain.

My dies are from Redding.

I thought real hard about the two cartridges you mentioned before choosing the 260 AI over the 6.5x284. It seems the difference is less shooting lightweight bullets. On heavy/long bullets, they are seated further into the case of the 284 cartridge which again lessens it's advantage. The 284 case still wins teh velocity race but I'm surprised how close the two are. I think I would stick with what I have if I were doing it again.

Hey neighbor,

I purchased my dies for the 6.5/08 Ackley from Hornaday. They have a shop that does custom dies and service is excellent. Prices are too!

BTW, how is that .250 AI a-doin'? Hope yours was a good hunting season.
