460 Van Horne
I was reading recently about this wildcat. It appears to have come about awhile back. It is a 460 Weatherby Mag case cut down to 2.5" with an overall length of 3.350". Basically a 458 Lott ballistics in a standard Mauser length action.

I believe this would still have application considering all the good Mauser '98 actions still kicking arond. Anyone have any first hand experience with this wildcat? Did the ballistics measure up? The article I read indicated nearly 2300 fps with a 500 grain Hornady RN. The only problem I can see is getting proper feeding from the magazine with these fat, belted cases.

Thanks

I'm sure it could be made to feed, with the right amount of money.
It's basically the same as the 460 A-Square short.
They have a load for 500g @ 2400, maybe plus a little.

500grSP,bullet,88.0gr of IMR4064=2,380fps-6315,ME

500grSP,bullet,91.0gr of IMR4895=2,450fps-6,670,ME

500grSP,bullet,91.0gr of IMR4320=2,435fps-6,580,ME

The round is now called the,460 A-SQUARE SHORT.A-SQUARE makes a rifle for it,but I would not want to shoot it.

Yes whenever a wildcat is made commercial it is changed slightly. To avoid patent infringement and payment????

To be exact, they aren't the same round.
But they are the same idea, ~2.5" 378 case necked to .458" and chambered in a 3 3/8" action.

Thanks guys, I didn't realize that the A-Square and Van Horn were the same (well nearly) configuration.

Redneck, why wouldn't you shoot one? I guess that recoil is the concern, or is it something else?

Thanks for the info, now to find a reamer. I wonder if the reamer would clean out a 458 WM without setting the barrel back?

Bigbullet -

W/re cleaning a 458wm chamber with a 460 a sqr short - it sure looks like it www.gmdr.com/levern/458460ashort.jpg , though one would have to open up the bolt face by .047"

do shoot straight,

gmushial,

Thank you for that link, that is extremely helpful. Yes, it does seem that the 458 WM chamber would be cleaned out without setting the barrel back. I see the COL is a little longer, so some adjustment to the magazine may be required, depends on how the reamer is throated though. Again thanks for the help.

I believe the 460 WBY case is just a 416 RGBY case necked to .458 with a belt added for good looks?

One might forgo the belt and just use rigby brass for this project. (easier headspace)
