The 10.57 Lazzeroni Meteor case has a shoulder of .557 inches and it would be a simple matter to neck it up to .475 giving a 30 degree shoulder a bit larger than the 35 Whelen. If this is not sufficient, there is more room for a larger shoulder, since the base is .577.

At max pressure this could give up to 7878 FPE but it could be backed off to serve a variety of applications. Is this useful, or just another big boomer?

Yes, and yes!
Considering the cost of Lazzeroni brass, why not just use Rigby/Lapua? Bigger by quite a bit. Probably match the Lott. In fact, in a 2.8" cartridge you could go to .510"!
Case length of 2.1" would give you ~106-8g water....
What's the Capstick hold? 112g? I'm thinking it would be a lot of fun in a little mini-express M70 with peeps. Maybe cast 500g at 2200. :-)
Or forward-mount a scope for the elephant scout!

Dave at CH Tool and Die should have my dies done in what we dubbed the .470 Rhino. It is the .500 Jeffery shortened to 2.00" and necked to .475. Can use both the rifle and pistol bullets, like the .400 DPR from A2. Best we can tell it would duplicate 470 NE performance

Many thanks to Jeffe for providing the prototype brass!

.475 on a full length Lazzeroni case ....

I only mentioned the Rhino because it is a nice short one that could work for a scout rifle ...

proper BOLT gun??? Bolt??

Mais non, mon ami. This is going in a DPMS LR-300, essentially a cousin on the AR-10. 8 (count em, EIGHT) rounds in a standard 20 round mag ....

We already did it with the .500 Phantom, spitting 975 gr cast lead at 1100 fps, and Barnes 570s at up to 1720 fps ...

500 Phantom Load Data

I have my Savage 110 FP here with a 24" Lothar Walther 1.00" diameter 1 in 9.5 twist sitting here, she's got all of 20 rounds on her, next time the Houston crowd wants to get together for some "plinking" try to give me more advance notice and I might be able to make it.

OK,OK...I give up...how about a 458 USA? Same case at 3.60 COL, 116 grs of usable case capacity with a 500 grainer.

Gents,

Has anyone done a "short" 458 on the Rigby yet?
I was going to pusue it, but John Noveske's 458 is very close. Still havn't heard any more from him on load development with the 500 grainers. Still looking to see a short 458, two or so inch, with 500's at 2150.

I'm pretty sure it's been done, and possibly the 460W case as well.

I don't think there is an advantage to having a light short actioned rifle that pushes 500 gr bullets to 2150 though eek2

Look over in the Big Bore forum, my post titled "two new cartridges...", the .470 Rhino brass holds 99.5 gr water and at 55000 psi will pump a 500 gr RNSP out at 2200 fps from a 24" barrel, all at 2.80" loaded length ...
