Gents:
Years ago I ran into a Model 88 Winchester lever action in a .284 Winchester necked up to accept a .416 or maybe a .411 bullet. Any of you guys have any knowledge or experience with this round and the Model 88 to chamber it?

I just did a 416/284 on a 98. Worked fine. I seem to remember that there was some chatter about the McPherson version being done on M88's. I would think it would work fine.

In theory it should work fine. However there will be the serious issue of bullet seating/length with 416 bullets. One of my buddies has a 338/284 and he has trouble loading anything more then 210's in his due to the rather short magazine length of the 88's. With a 416, I would imagine at least in the 88, anything more then flat pointed 300's might have to be seated VERY deep into the case to function.

In a bolt, no issue, have at it! You can always choose a 30-06 length action as your base and could theoretically load up the big 450's with out much fuss if the throat is set up for it.

I think a 411 would be a better option, for the 88 at least, because it opens up .41 cal pistol bullets into the mix and lead projectiles, plus some other "softer" and less constructed bullets meant for the 405 Win. The only downside of the 416 (if you can call it that) is that most of the bullets really are set up for the big magnums going much, much faster and being shot at very large, tough game.

Thanks for your input. While I am a double rifle man by choice there are still a few single barrels that interest me. This wildcat is one.

I would be concerned about those long 40 caliber bullets taking up powder space..I also built a 338/284 on a 99 Savage and was pretty well restricted to 200 gr. bullets and the 210 Nosler..but the 210 Nosler was a killing machine so never saw a need for a heavier bullet in that gun. I used it primarily for a saddle gun to hunt elk..

A .411/284 works just fine in a detach. mag 99 Savage. The 300 gr bullet by Barnes can be pushed faster than a 405 WRA (lever) and equal to a 400 Whelen. More than 300 gr is questionable and really unneeded.
