Re: 416 idea
I know the 416 Rem is the easiest off the shelf sort of cartridge in this class, but it also has some things about it I don't like. I'm not on a quest for fame or discovery, I just want things the way I like them. Life's too short to have to accept some cartridge you don't like because it is on the shelf at wal-mart. I wish the 416 Rem would have been introduced in a form more like this instead of a long belted case - I just don't like them. By the time I can afford to go to Africa - I'll be ok to buy a specific safari rifle, if the CZ 375 RUM conversion won't cut it (but I think it will). Maybe in 10 years either RUM cartridges will be commonly available in Africa or no one will be hunting there at all!! Hell, in 10 years, I might even spring for custom headstamped brass for this thing.

Looking at the latest Midway catalog:
500 pcs Remington 375 RUM brass...... $214.30
500 pcs BELL 404 Jeff brass............... $724.75
500 pcs Norma 404 Jeff brass............. $788.95

That's a big difference. Easily enough to cover the price of a custom reamer for $150-$180. Even adding in $200 custom dies for my 416 above, you still come out ahead by avoiding things based on the Jeff case. I really just want to shoot a 416 of this configuration, and realistically won't use it for anything more than deer or elk in the forseeable future. It's just something I want to "make and do" out of this weird drive to be different. Just because something is commercially available does not mean that it is what I want/need. The same reason that I don't own a 30-06 (never have, never will). maxman
