BillPaRe: 270/08 Ackley? Anybody have info?
I built a 270-08AI about two years age for a light carry rifle on a short '70 action. Basically it duplicates the 270 Win. in a smaller package.
Forming brass is a simple matter of running 308 Win cases in a 7mm-08 sizer and then in the 270-08 die and fireforming them. I had a few minor problems going down to 27 on one pass.
Powders in the 4350 range seem to work best with 130 grain bullets. I just started loading some Varget with good inital results. Velocites range right around the 2800-3000 mark with 130s.
Mark Pinkston at Kailua Custom barreled mine. He was a great help with info, dies, etc.

BillPaThe reason for the 270-0AI was a simple one, I have at least one of the other factory offerings in 6,6.5 and 7 versions based on the 308 round. I just like something different and the 270 seemed like a good choice at the time. My thought was to build a 27 bore on a light short action rifle that would duplicate the ballistics of the 270 Win with 130 grain bullets which it does with 8-10 grains less powder. The bullet choice was always based on a 130, so availblity of other weights wasn't considered. If the sitution arises where I need a heavier/lighter bullet, I simply grab another rifle.
Why did I use 308 brass instead of 260,708 and etc? Simple. I have a good supply of virgin 308 brass.
Would I suggest someone building one? Not really. The question was asked and I replied with some info if someone was interested putting one together. Building a custom dosen't alway depend on logic! Its just something I may want even if it dosen't make sense to someone else. The usual question at the club is what weird thing I'm shoot'n today.
Take care ya all !!!!

Mark R Dobrenskisounds good to me, cattin isn't always about what makes sense, at least it hasn't been to me. But I do enjoy the heck out of it! And that is what a lot of this is all about.
