On a recent trip we were discussing the virtues of the .22 Newton with the .228 bore, any ideas on how the bring this back into service. What we are looking for would be barrel( 1-10" .228 dia) and reamer, dies would come from RCBS, cases would be a reformed 30 06.

Who makes .228 Bullets?

Last I saw, Hornady still makes a .228 cal, 70-gr SP. That's pretty slim pickings to build a rifle around, though. Your gun doesn't like that particular bullet, and you are out of luck. Of course, if you're really determined, you could set up a bullet-swaging press for a grande or so.

If Pacnor is making barrels surely has to be more than one bullet mfg? E mail Pacnor, they should have any idea............

We were planning on using H mantles from RWS or Norma Oryx in .228 and the Hornaday's for target work and devolopment.

I played a lot with the 22 HiPower about 10years ago and there aint no 228 bullets out there that I could afford except the Hornaday. European brands may be more avalilable now but boy are they pricey. The 22 Newton ballistics are about like the 22/30-30. The case was a 7x 57 necked down and loaded with a 90gr bullet. Claimed velocity was 3103 fps with 40gr DuPont 15 1/2.
Why bother with the 228 when you can get good 224 bullets to 90 gr now? The original twist was 1:8.
