Can anyone help me decide which wildcat caliber to put my 8mm Mauser into!! I have a brno barreled Parker and Hale with a Mauser action in 8mm mauser. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I have "booted" a couple of threads up to the top that cover this subject.

Go to "Medium Bore Rifles" and check out "8mm Options".

On the "Gunsmithing" forum, click on "8mm-06, 338-06 or 280rem. Mauser".

This thing has been "beat to death" on these forums before.

Yes this things been beaten to death so one more lash ain't going to hurt (much). Before the gun nuts could communicate on the internet the magazines had all the sway. The rags either ho humed the 8mmX57mm, beat it into the dirt or just ignored it.Now that a lot of us are climbing out of our reloading closets and sharing our knowledge, theories, and opinions we are gaining much. Because of this, the abundance of mod.98s and the availability of inexpensive ammo the 8mmX57mm is enjoying a resurgence in popularity, and rightly so. It is a great classically designed cartridge. When reload ,as you would have to do with the 8mm06 anyway,it's in the field performance will duplicate that of the formitable 30-06. It has been used to bring down every big game specie on the American contenents. I guess what i'm saying is" Don't change it" and that from a wildcatter roger

baartsche: A valid point, especialy if the 8x57 rifle in question is a M48 Yugo or any "intermediate length" M98 action.



In that case the 8mm-06 would be a waste of time as the short COL would not allow taking full advantage of the larger volume of the longer (06) case.



Even when loaded to 3.34" COL in a "standard length" M98 action, the 8mm-06 will only best the 8x57 by about 100fps with perhaps another 100fps from an Ackley Improved version.



The availability of bulk quantity priced, full power, "blaster ammo" (S&B) from Cabela's makes the option of "leaving it alone" more viable than perhaps it has been in the past.



30gibbs: You might want to check out the "Unsafe pressure W/Yugo 48A?" thread on the "Reloading" forum. It will give you some idea of what performance level "leaving it alone" will allow.

i sort of stepped into a new toy yesterday. nice cherry Yugo 48 action. i see a 8mmAI in my future. maybe a 24" pac-nor a JRS stock mod70 style safty and 2-7 leupold. should make a great elk rifle

Sorry, can't do that with the M48 Yugo!(If you are talking 8mm-06 A.I.)

The magazine is too short, this is an "intermediate length" M98 large ring action.

COL will be limited to about 3.150".

I did a "Quickload" model of an 8x57 A.I. on the "Unsafe pressure W/Yugo 48A" thread.

If you can find a "smith" with a reamer,go for it. Perhaps a 7x57 A.I. reamer could be used by running it in a little further. The neck would then be reamed as a separate operation.

Having a reamer made for less than 100fps hardly seems worth it.

You might want to check out that thread.

I did some research on this one also.

The 8x57 barrel will have to be "set back" about .135" to clean up the 8x57 chamber.

The barrel walls @ the shoulder area will be very thin.

Professional opinion is that there will be sufficient wall thickness, however there will be no margin for error. In other words, this would not be an appliction for "pushing the envelope".

The "gunsmithing" required for proper feeding may be extensive, with no gaurantee of sucess. Perhaps there is a "professional" smith out there that has experience with the feed issues.

Since your Parker Hale will be a regular length action I would recommend a 8mm. Gibbs. The only setback is the die cost. Mine were about $100, but if you already have a 30 gibbs then you know this. Mark

How about an 8mm-376 Steyr Improved?

Pacific tool has the reamer drawings and quoted $160 for the reamer.

Check out the "376 Steyr as a basis for wilcat cartridges" thread on the "gunsmithing" forum. (wilcat is the spelling of the topic) I just gave it a "boot"

These are my rantings of a few years ago. I have since decided on the 8x68S as the ultimate "rechamber" job for a K98. (oops, another option)

The 8x68S will barely fit into a K98 let alone a M48 Yugo. The 8mm-376 Steyr will fit into the M48 nicely.
