A final decision has been reached. I'm rebarreling a L579 action with a 26 Hart barrel chambered for the 6mm.284. Should I go with a Shilen #4 Magnum Sporter contour or should I go with a #5 1/2 Medium Weight Varmint and have it fluted? IF fluted, 6 flutes or 8? This will all be dropped into a Harry Lawson Cochise thumbhole stock of 4F French Walnut. It will be glassed, free floated and pillar bedded. This will be my coyote/antelope rifle.

Hard question.

#1). Hope you are athletic, 'cause you will not be in shape to tote this tool if you live on beer, twinkies and television (ha, ha, ha).

#2). I would go "varmint" 'cause I think the sporter has a curve to it, barrel conteur, and that would make the flutes a bit less "high" and "stiff" as I understand the game. I am not a machinist.

#3). I would be inclined to go with the 8 flutes 'cause I would want the max. weight reduction possible in this program. But I am getting old. Flutes are new to me and that is a "wet behind the ears" opinion. I will check back for others.

Obviously, this is not a prairie dog gun. Your barrel life wouldn't be 30 minutes on a great day. But for your use, unless your luck is all bad, you should be very happy, if a bit tired at the end of the day. ENJOY. luck.
