<HHI 812>Ever heard of a .40X2" or .416x2"?
Anyone ever heard of a .40x2" or .416x2" cartridge? Was told there was an article in #50 issue of Rifle magazine. Would appreciate any info on the cartridge! Thanks! e-mail at drminak@hotmail.com

LoneEagleI have heard of a .458x2" which is a .458 Win Mag shortened. Maybe the .416x2" is a necked down version of that. I also know that the fellows at Beartooth Bullets
www.beartoothbullets.com have a .416 Beartooth that is based on the .350 Rem Mag case with a long neck for their cast bullets.

Also, there is a round called the .416 Lockhart that is a necked up .350 Rem Mag with out the long neck of the Beartooth design. Here is an article on one out of an Encore handgun

<HHI 812>Sean-thanks for the info! Very informative! Reason I am asking is I am getting a Competitor barrel chambered in a .41 TSM(.350 Rem Mag opened to a .41 caliber, and the only other chambering I could find close to it, was the .40x2". I was going with their .41x338 Win Mag, but didn't want that big a case for my short 16" barrel. I also have a 16" .338-06 AI that works great, but didn't want the shallow shoulder of the .40 Whelen. Was hoping the .41 TSM had a better shoulder? Will try and see if I can get hold of either or your sources for load data. Thanks again for your help! Dennis

jeffeossothere's also the 416 barnes, which is a 45/70 necked down, and the 416x450marlin, for a lever gun, both would be just about the same thing, pressure issues aside.

LoneEagleDennis,
Is this a .411 or .416 Bore. Sean

Lee MartinThe American Rifleman article related to a .450 Marlin being necked to .400" (I believe they called it the .400 Marlin). Anyways, it was originally chambered in an 1895 Guide Gun and performed well. Overall, the round is extremely close the .416 wildcats that have been built on the .350 Rem Mag.

<HHI 812>Sean, I went with the .411. Wanted the option of getting the cheaper lighter .41 mag pistol bullets for plinking and practicing.

<HHI 812>Thanks guys! Any chance you folks noticed if there was a common powder and load that gave the best velocity and accuracy? Looking to get some 300 grain Barnes or similar, and want to pick up some powder. Just not sure which powder to get? Want to stick with the 300 grain bullets, nothing heavier. Thanks for the help! Lee MartinIt seemed to me that it was in early 2002 (possibly February or March). I'll check when I get home tonight.

LoneEagleDennis,
Sounds good. I had thought about a .411 Bowman Magnum, when I was shooting a .41 Magnum handgun. I had the same thoughts. Tell me how you like it. I may have to do one for my Encore, to go with the .350 Rem. Sean

<HHI 812>Will do Sean! What is a .411 Bowman Magnum?
27 September 2003, 01:02
LoneEagleThe 411 Bowman is the .338 case necked up for .411 bullets. Les Bowman did one in the '70's I think it was. At the time he did it there were more .411 bullets available than .416's. I guess he never ended up making it to Africa w/ his new rifle though. Sean

bigboredanHHI,
The .40X2 or 10.6 X 51 is basically a 458 X 2 necked down with a 25 degree shoulder angle.
The 416 express is a 350 rem mag case opened up with a 30 degree shoulder.
I found the cartridges in wildcats II and ken waters Pet loads.
CH4D makes a die set in 375/450 marlin. I plan to build a rifle in this.

<HHI 812>Not sure if I got the right Dan, but are you the one that knows Jack Huntington and plays with them Dominator conversions? If so, this is Dennis in AK! If not, thanks for the info anyway. I'm trying to get loading data for this Competitor barrel, but its called a .41 TSM? Off the .350 Rem case, but have no idea of shoulder angle or other details? Competitor makes their own dies and all, so it will come with the barrel. Was thinking of using .40 Whelen data for now? Not sure if I have access to your sources? Just wanted to find out what powders would work best for a 300 grain bullet, and starting and max load?
