I made this 40-90 Sharps Straight Improved, years ago with no help of a computer.

I just ran my data thru the program, and amazing.

82 grains of Reloader 15 at 2585 fps is spot on for a 300 grainer.

Other powders will get it going a bit faster.

It shows 2450 out of a 350 Speer, that puts this with a 416 Taylor.

PSI is only 48000

115 H2O, volume

How do they do this?

The programs goes by the case capacity and bore diameter; it doesn't care what you call it or how you got there. Then it takes known data and powder burn rates, and calculates from there. It is not magic.
Anyway, a 40-90 Sharps was a BP cartridge, so yours is now something different.

It is amazing at how close my data was.

Everyone should own a 3.250" long cased cartridge.

and

It will shoot a 300 Hawk at 2585 into a 3/8" 3 shot group!

How do you get 3.25 case length from a 40-90? It was only about 2.5” originally?

40-90 Sharps Straight, 3.250"

Bill73, When I started this project, I found that there are several 40-90s. One base off a 405 basic, a Bottle Neck, Shiloh, Peabody and Bullard.
The 40-90 Sharps [ Straight ] is 3.250". Bertram makes it.

It took 3 tries to get the right brass, even with phone calls.

Cartridges of the World shows it.

Yes, this 3.25-inch cartridge was never listed in Sharps catalogs, having been introduced as an "Everlasting" in 1885, and produced by both UMC and Winchester, per my 11th edition COW, page 138.
Question for MoreBS is whether the Bertram brass is constructed like conventional BPCR brass or like the actual "everlasting" type of case with extra heavy walls and reduced internal capacity.

There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t.

Bill, It is a light case, that is why I never pushed the pressure.

What is the base diameter of the Everlasting? [.477]

Yup -- .477 base diameter both for the .40-90 SS and the .40-90 Ballard from which it may have been derived, according to COW.

Not a Wildcat, but an old cat with some life left!
Picking up my .45-90 double rifle tomorrow and just booked first hunt with it for Saturday 4/16.
The regulation target is right on at 45 yards, so maybe I can hit something. Should take only one shot with North Fork 350SS bullets at 2300 fps.
Exotic ranch cull/herd reduction hunt .
Should be fun and bring back some fresh meat for freezer.

Way ahead of you with .405 WCF, case length 2.583 with factory 300 grain velocity of 2200 fps.
Plus 400 grain Woodie velocity of 2100+.
