carpetman1Anyone casting their own pellets?
Several years ago on another forum there was a group buy for a mold for a heavy pellet. The theory was that this heavier pellet would carry a longer distance and have more wallop. It was actually just opposite of what I wanted. I mostly shoot sparrows in my back yard and a pellet with a parachute that stopped the pellet at my property line would be to my liking. Anyways, this mold was a 25 grain .177 pellet. Someone ordered me a mold as I do cast bullets for my center fire rifles and handguns. The mold was a flop. The pellets keyholed. Someone in Mexico claimed good accuracy if they shot them backwards. I tried that and accuracy wasn't too good and little penetration. I do believe a good mold could be made and good results casting your own pellets. Just wondering if anyone is doing that?

jdollarthere is no way a 25 grain pellet in .177 if going to be anything but a flop, even in the most powerful .177 PCP rifle( much less in an underpowered springer). for your purposes( sparrows at close range), you would generally be better off with a light alloy pellet. it will run out of gas beyond 25 yards and drop like a rock. i shoot 25 gr pellets in .22 from a 65fpe rifle and it is fine to about 75 yards but it is not a pellet suitable for a .177.

carpetman1jdollar--I didn't expect the heavy pellet would be a success. I didn't order a mold, someone else bought it for me. My prediction would have been that it would be a flop--I didn't even know what weight it would be. I shoot Crosman Premier 10.5 grain pellets as they seemed to be the most accurate in my rifle.

jdollarif those are the most accurate- stick with them. the worst enemy of something good is something better.it's amazing what a sub 12fpe .177 will do when you hit the right spot. 2 weeks ago in England i killed a pheasant at 42 yards with a 10.5 fpe Daystate Mark4 in .177 with a simple head shot. bang, flop.

carpetman1jdollar---spot on. I get in heated threads all the time about shooting deer with a .223. I really don't understand why people can't grasp that a bullet, even a .22 through a deer's heart, lung or liver or combination thereof is not going to kill that animal very close to where it was shot.

PAPIJust an " FYI ".
I'm not doing any Pellet casting.
However, I did consider doing some " Pellet Swaging " a few years back ( .22 / .25 ).
Here's a bit of info on the subject, for anyone interested…?

carpetman1I'd be more likely to swage centerfire rifle bullets. Swaging pellets would be way out of my price range. I already cast so I'm set up for that.
