Went duck hunting this weekend in the salt marshes out of Anahuac, Texas. My 40 year old Browning A-5 didn't take so well to it. Has big splotches of rust on the receiver. Tried to wipe it off with Hoppe's # 9 - not working too well. Haven't ever seen this kind of rust on any of my guns - is there something else that will take it off.........this gun was probably a 95% gun before the hunt........in really good shape - thanks for any suggestions.

Because this is new rust and clearly only surface rust at this time, any good quality oil will get under it and allow you to remove it. Soak the rust spots and let the oil sit for an hour, then wipe it off and most of the rust should be gone. Soak a cloth with oil and rub the spot where the rust was located to clean residual off.

Leave a good amount of oil on the exterior and check every day for the next few days, wiping and re-applying oil as necessary.

If an abrasive is needed, use the least damaging, like a nylon toothbrush, or 00000 Fine steel wool along with the oil. In any case, you want to remove the rust ASAP to prevent pitting in the metal or long term damage.

There are more exotic products and methods but this should work for your "new" rust. Hope this helps. Oh, and be sure to wipe the exterior of your Browning with an oily cloth prior to going into the duck blind. And remember, Hoppes #9 is a bore solvent, not an oil/rust preventer.

I just removed surface rust from a handgun that mi purchased. I put Corrosionx on it and let it sit for 48 hours then wiped lightly with OOOO steel wool. It came right off and didn't damage the bluing in the least.

Thanks Guys - appreciate the advice. I soaked a cloth and laid on the side of the receiver - had to use a steel brush to sort of work on some of it - but most all is gone. Going to check ever couple of days to make sure.
