Back from 7 weeks in South Africa.
We travelled and hunted. My son Russ had his wedding at our friends place, Africa Dawn Hunting Safaris in the Waterberg Mountains. My 9 year old Grandson Jaxon successfully hunted a blesbok and a blu wildebeest there with his single shot 30-30 using CEB Raptor bullets.

We spent a week in KNP, a week at Chobe Game Lodge in Botswana and a week near Underberg at Buskmans Neck in the foothills of the Drakkensberg Mountains.
I hunted buffalo in the Lowveld for a week with Mkulu African Hunting.and my wife Sandy was the videotographer. We had a great time.

A story of the buffalo hunt will be published in the African Hunting Gazette called "Bullets for Buffalo" I will post it here in a few weeks.

I killed 4 buffalo at 25- 40 yds on the hunt, experimenting with some excellent bullets.
- .577 NE using 700 gr. Peregrine Bush Buster and 600 gr CEB Raptor.
- .500-110 Custom using CEB 410 gr. Raptor bullets.
All bullets killed the buffalo quickly ( One shoulder shot each.) as they should with those cartridges. The 577 Peregrine Bush Buster was excellent. The CEB Raptors, in both cartridges, really put the cape buffalo on the ground. It looked like the buffalo had been elecrocuted. The PH's, trackers and skinners were pretty impressed with their terminal performance of the CEB Raptors, both in the field and in the skinning shed.

Pieter Kriel of Mkulu African Hunting was the best.

Glad to hear you had a great trip Brian!
One of these days I may go and see what Buffalo hunting is all about, but for now I am afraid to get the bug any worse than that first trip created.
That little hand-cannon you pack around is certainly an interesting choice for a firearm.

Thanks to all,
Jimmy j, I sure have spent a lot of time hunting pheasant and huns in the old days around Brooks.

My 50-110 is very handy, With it's 22 inch barrel, t is 1/2 inch shorter than my 30-30 Win Mod 94 saddle gun. It's made from a 10 ga H&R shotgun.

It has a modified chamber. It's a true 500 cal like the 500 S&W. I like the Cutting Edge Bullet 410. gr Raptor at 1940-2000 fps. for cape buffalo. The rifle is a bit too heavy, 11+ lbs. It's heavy for the old man to pack around but it is quite pleasant to shoot. I will have a video on YouTube in due course.

Hey Brian:

Did you happen to meet Jack from Md while there?
He just got back Tuesday from two months, half of it with Pieter and family.

Good to hear how well it went.

George

I toured with Pieter some years ago. He is a fine tour guide; I've heard lots of good things about him as a PH; he is a great guy to spend time with.

ClaMar, I agree completely. Pieter is good man with a great sense of humour. Good bushman who is willing to share his knowledge and a good historian.
