What a fine time you guys had

That old bushbuck is outstanding.

I have walked in the foot prints of the elephant, listened to lion roar and met the buffalo on his turf. I shall never be the same.

Here is a photo of the mountain that gives the name to the town in the area. Modimolle. ( earlier Nylstroom )

The original name Modimolle either means Place of the Spirits, or according to some, "The Spirits have eaten", apparently after some custom of an old local tribe who sacrificed humans to the ancestors by throwing the victims off a cliff of Kranskop (meaning "Cliff Hill").

The first Europeans to travel in this area belonged to a religious zealot group called the Jerusalem Trekkers, who wished to migrate to the Christian Holy Land. A nearby hill which looks a bit like a pyramid was mistaken for one in Egypt, and they thought the little river in the area that was flowing north and called Maghaliquain or MaghaHquain, was the Nile River, and called their settlement Nylstroom (meaning Nile Stream) [see eg. Aspects of Nature in Different Lands and Different Climates By Alexander von Humboldt, David M Knight; Scientific Travellers 1790-1877].

The first town was laid out in 1866 on the farm Rietvallei, owned by Ernest Collins. The original western town was called Nylstroom but in 2002 it was renamed to Modimolle.

During the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902), in 1901, a concentration camp was established in Nylstroom. About 550 women and children died in this camp.

The second-last Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa, JG Strydom, practiced law in Nylstroom, and was involved in politics from the 1920s until 1958, when he died as Prime Minister.

The camp:

What's the story on the COBRA?????

Nothing really, just stumbled over it Roll Eyes

But this make every spitting cobra to a story...I guess

A spitting cobra is one of several species of cobras that have the ability to eject venom from their fangs when defending themselves against predators. The sprayed venom is harmless to intact skin. However, it can cause permanent blindness if introduced to the eye and left untreated.

Makes me respect them, in a way.........

So what is the story with the rifle with the tube on the end. Is that an air rifle (don't laugh, they used an air rifle on the Lewis & clark expedition in the early 1800s), or is it a harmonic system or a silencer, or what. Thanks
15 April 2011, 23:46
STUBBERUD
@tysue

The rifle is a Tikka. Cal. 30-06.

The Tube is a silencer from A-tech. Is reducing the recoil with about 50% so its almost like shoting a airgun. Wink I love that silencer! Have inproved my accuracy a lot. I shot a lot better with this rig now, than I do with my 375H&H. ( I know pratice, pratice, pratice.... Cool )
