The old man and his Roan
The old man had hunted with me before and had taken a great Sable and good solid Buff at Royal Kafue. That trip he had forfeited his opportunity on Roan for another client of mine which was an extremely generous gesture. The following year we went onto Munyamadzi with Thor and the old man just could not squeeze the trigger on some of the big bulls that reside here. We shot another Buffalo and an exceptional Bushbuck and in all had a very fine safari with Thor who without doubt is one of Zambia's top PHs.

The lower Luangwa valley is subdivided into substantial private hunting estates and here occur the largest concentrations of free ranging Southern Roan in Africa. And this year it was again to be my choice of hunting area and we would try again in October when the Roan leave the the hot rocky escarpments for the valley floor. My choice of area was Nyamvu which is a first class venue owned and operated by Zaeed Patel. The lower Luangwa is extremely scenic and can boast some of the most beautiful landscapes in Zambia. The grasses are now bleached by the sun and contrast greatly with the stark grey Mopane. Colbalt blue hills dominate the horizons.

The hunting and area was all that I had hoped and this time a large Roan bull made a mistake and the old man put down the most cherished of trophies.

We had some opportunities on great crusty dagga boys but will save them for next year. We also put a bullet over what looked to be a 19 inch Bushbuck and winged a good pig which some Lions bought to bay the next day and kindly allowed us to salvage the skull and teeth.

If Roan and big Buffalo are your thing and you want first class hospitality in truly wild country then these substantial private estates are the place to go. These once dormant areas have been fully rejuvenated and are stiff with game. The quality of animals is superb and much has been invested on the infrastructure. One of Africa's true success stories.

Good on the old man!

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Indeed and we smoked some fine cigars and drank a couple of drams of good whisky. Next year will be a brace of buffalo and will all get together for some ducks yourside.

Andrew,

I've been jinxed on roan and definitely want to consider a venture into Zambia, but be careful who you call an "old man". He looks like a young man to me.

Lavaca,

You need to hunt Roan where they are common mate. This old man has had numerous heart surgeries and quite disadvantaged. To get him on to one of the spooky bests was a challenge indeed.

Mr. Baldry is quite the artisan with a pen, paintbrush, and rifle. I hope to share a campfire soon.
