As we start getting into our hunting season in Zimbabwe and Mozambique we have put together a small video of 10 different Buffalo in varied degrees of obscurity, hopefully this will give the first time Buffalo hunter a more realistic view of what to expect. The shot placement books are an invaluable guide however in ""Most"" of Africa Buffalo are not shot in two Inch high grass standing perfectly Broadside.

Very interesting, thank you for posting.

Funny thing is, I would shoot higher on all the body shots than shown in the videos.

Nothing wrong there, I just prefer it that way.

I have seen quite a few people shooting lower that they should.

I would prefer to hit the top of the hear, or the aorta.

Regardless of animal, and regardless of body position, I tell my friends to aim to hit the center of the chest cavity.

If the animal is not too far, and one cannot see the body, a head or neck shot works great.

For some animals - eland, buffalo etc - one can take a neck or head shot providing he is using a scoped rifle, and knows how to use it.

Funny enough, many newcomers to hunting tend to shoot low.

Good point Saeed. Vast majority of woundings are high front leg shots, then come gut shots...

High lung shot (under the spine so the spine is not hit) can be a bugger too tho...

Sometime ago, someone published something called the PAYLINE!

It was the most stupid thing ever published on shot placements!

He had two line crossing the body of the animal.

Imagine an animal facing to the right.

I think he said if you shoot above the horizontal, and to the left of the vertical, you are going to pay for your mistake!

Thanks, I do agree- top of the circle!
This video suppose to give a more realistic view of your potential shot, (not inch high grass with the Buffalo in full view). Hunters often under-estimate how big/wide a buffalo is and angle of the shot is very important. In deep shade if you think the buffalo is broad side and in fact is slightly angled this can result in only one lung being hit!! -Bad-

It was quite an eye opener when I saw my Buff skinned out and getting cut up. Buzz has told me the neck is a lot lower then most guys assume. They have a small hump on top and some guys who try for a neck shot end up shooting too high and go through nothing vital.

Once the meat was removed and I could see the neck and spine it made total sense.

Coming from Texas deer hunting I had learned to shoot the crease too. But in Africa I first learned to change that to the higher lung shot of below mid line. When I can.

It is certainly true that with different shot presentations they don't always come off perfectly.

That last shot in the video was excellent on the running buffalo.

Def Scott I have one with your name on it - just got back from a trophy Elephant hunt and we were in and out of lots of buffalo. After the "bit of rain" we just had the bush and animals are looking stunning!
