Here is a short clip of a cape we took this last season. This bull took a solid quartering on shot and we had to Finnish him off later. Unfortunately we didn't have the cameraman for the ensuing gun battle.
It's tough to cram 3-4 days of hunting into a 3min clip. I hope we got it right

Andrew , I thought about it, he was a real good bull but was still soft. He's going to be a good bull this year or next year for sure

Agree and the shot placement was very good.

The bullet only penetrated a few inches, never reached the chest. Client was using a 270gr DG round in a 375H&H. I personally prefer a 300 gr+ .

We finished him off the next day with a 380gr RHINO monolithic .

Looks like a one-lung-only shot to me. Lack of penetration could have kept the bullet from creating double-lung damage, and the heart was likely missed. Also, the shot looked a bit low to hit the aorta.

Frontal shots on Cape buffalo are problematic. I've made this mistake twice, and in both instances it did not bring down the Cape buffalo. In fact, in both instances there were arduous, iffy, and very dangerous follow-up tracking events.

I killed one Cape buffalo with single mid-line frontal shot that went throught the heart. IMO, if you hit left or right of dead center, you'll likely have follow-up issues.

Cape buffalo need CNS, heart, and/or double-lung shots to be killed quickly and efficiently.

Interesting topic. The bull was quartering just a bit to the right. A shot right into the center of the heart about 1/4 to 1/3 up the brisket would probably miss both shoulders (if I am visualizing this correctly) and you would need to aim slightly to the right of centerline, since the heart lies a few inches (I'm guessing about 6 inches) behind the brisket.

A shot into the far shoulder (via the brisket) would probably miss the heart altogether and a shot into the near shoulder would probably miss everything important if too far forward (as this shot appears to be).

Perhaps a spine shot would have been more appropriate?

Any thoughts?
