I would like to hunt leopard, waterbuck, and nyala. Where?

Hi,
I have been fortunate enough to hunt Africa twice so far. First time to South Africa in 2005 and last year to Zimbabwe. While I enjoyed both hunts, I was a little disappointed with my Zimbabwe hunt. The area I hunted was definitely over hunted, and the organization of the Safari Company had something left to be desired. Anyway, I would like to go back to Africa.
I would like to hunt for a leopard, waterbuck, and nyala as my main hunt. I have cape buffalo, sable, eland, kudu, gemsbuck, bushbuck, etc. I do not have to hunt Zimbabwe again. I am just looking for an area that gives me the best chance for all 3 animals. I also would mind a crocodile, but this is not big deal.

One of the leopard hunts I was most impressed with at the SCI show was with Jonathon Hulme of Zambezi hunters in Zimbabwe www.zambezihunters.com They can be booked through John Barth of www.bigbuffalo.com

You might also ask Mark Young about what Roger Whittall Safaris is up to in Mozembique.

Do not forget Namibia or South Arica as well.
Namibia as got quite a high success rate depending on outfitter and SA with pre baiting is also a good destination for big toms.

Even though you have been to Zim, I would think that any of the outfitters hunting the Save Conservancy could put you on one of their huge leopards, and they also have Nyala and waterbuck as well. The other suggestions for Mozambique are good as well. Mokore safaris hunts both the Save and Mozambique.
I'd talk to Adam or Mark at Safari Trackers- I have used Adam personally, and will in the future. Mark is a frequent and very knowledgeable contributor to the forums.

I've only been to Africa once, but it was to Zimbabwe to hunt with Mokore Safari's as booked with Mark Young. I thought the operation was so outstanding I'm going back for leopard/ buff/ sable in '09.

While there last fall I saw two leopard, (one was really good I was told,) lots of waterbuck, and I took one that measured 29 1/2". I also saw one very good Nyala. I'd recommend Mokore.

Again, not that I have any experience with anything else!

Thanks for all the replies. I will be checking in to all of the recommendations. How is the Nyala hunting in ZIM, I do not hear much about it? Is Mozambique a lot more then ZIM? I guess I will find out.

I agree with Frederik (Safari-Hunt) about Namibia. Certain areas of Namibia have a very high leopard population due to the abundance of plains game. It would be similar to a supermarket for leopards.

On the property I hunt, the last four leopards taken in two years were all during the day. Three were walking around in the open. Only one was over it's own kill and that was my cat. I spent only 30 minutes in the blind before he showed up to finish his meal.

Who did you hunt with in Namibia? I think Mozambique is not going to work for me. It is definitely my first choice, but the prices don't fit my budget. Might have to wait a few years for Mozambique. I think ZIM or Namibia is what I need to look at.

I hunt with Tommy Hall, PH and resident farm manager of Otjikoko, Omaruru, Namibia. Please don't confuse Otjikoko with the one advertised on the website. This farm, along with two other adjoining farms, are owned by Martin Walter. They total about 165,000 acres. Hunting is limited to only 25 total hunters for the entire season and thus very little hunting pressure.

Most of the previous clients have been European. Only this year is Otjikoko looking forward to enjoying more American hunters. Tommy Hall was an independant PH for many years and has settled on Otjikoko as farm manager. Plains game is extremely abundant, and thus maintains a relatively high leopard population.

The daily fees are very low at $250 per day for 1 x 1 for 12 day minimum for leopard. The trophy fee for leopard is only $3,125. Bait shooting is included with your daily rate. Drop me a PM and I can fill you in on more details if you wish. This is probably the best deal going for leopard in 2008.

I'm certain that the rates will be adjusted upwards for 2009 due to the strong Euro and our poor exchange rate.

I'm not sure if they have Sable available but Charlie and Pam Stanton are in Australia at the moment so i will ask them.

Spoke to Charlie today. He has no more quota for Sable or Leopard for 08.

I set up a similar safari for August 2009 with my good hunting buddy.
We're going after Leopard, Buff, Sable & Nyala in Mozambique. We used
Mark Young as our booking agent & will be going with BAHATI SAFARIS.

My situation was similar to yours, I've been to Zim on 4 previous safaris &
really was looking for something new. It looks as though we'll be using
dogs to go after the Leopards, I hear it is quite a rush.

Anyway, according to their website & some previous hunters, their area
has all the animals you're after.

I'll be one of those few American hunters going to Otjikoko this June and will post a complete hunt report upon my return. I've heard nothing but great things said about Tommy Hall and many members of the Namibian Professional Hunters Association consider him to be one of the best PHs in Namibia.

I can always recommend TG Safaris for the game you named. I shot a very nice waterbuck with Tino last year and might be going for nyala in April. IÂ´m booking a leopard hunt for -09. I know he has a license for leopard right now so you might want to contact him soon.

You might want to consider hunting leopard and waterbuck in Zim where prices are the lowest and then stopping in RSA to hunt the KuaZulu/Natal area for Inyala. A five day hunt should be plenty and you might pick up a few other species also.

There are some transplanted nyala in Namibia; however most outfitters that offer them on their price lists have them listed as P.O.R. and you know what that usually means.

TG Safaris is in Limpopo Province in RSA. IÂ´ve hunted with Tino repeatedly and weÂ´ve always managed to obtain what weÂ´ve been hunting. HeÂ´s taken some beautiful leopard during his career, same goes for waterbuck and nyala. He runs a very friendly operation and hÃs prices are reasonable. He started hunting yesterday so he might be hard to get hold of the next two weeks, if you like PM me andÂ´I can help you with some more details.

Another vote for Bahati Safaris. I have hunted both there and they consistantly get 30-33 inch waterbuck and high 20s to 30 inch plus nyala. The biggest bodied nyala I have ever seen.

I'm curious too since MC had everything but the nyala offered to him form the same camp in Zim. I know RSA can at least offer all the animals but the leopards are the most difficult to hunt of any in Afica and the plains game is all behind game fence.

Well, after much searching. I could not find a hunt for all my animals in 2009. I could come close, but always one animal short.
I am going to book a moose hunt in Alaska on the Peninsula for 2009 for two people. I got a lot of great information here and made some good contacts I can use for next time. I should be sending my deposit next week.

I would do the leopard hunt as a seperate hunt itself especially for leopard, and your best bet: Namibia!

I also would not hunt Moose on the Pen. theres more productive areas north, especially if you want trophy quality.

I know we are on the wrong forum, but while we are on the subject, For Moose (for Non-Res.) I would look at 24A (harvest) and 24B (harvest)and lastly the areas around Kotz (however its a draw for NR) these areas I just mentioned have record potential bulls. I took my 62" with a bow last year, and still saw bigger ones. good luck, PM me for questions.

June/July is probably perfect for leopard. Earlier is fine but the heavy cover makes hunting other animals more challenging. Later in the year as it gets hotter the baits go bad quickly and very late there are baby warthogs etc everywhere making the hunting very easy for the leopards.

The best of the cat guys will be 90% plus regardless of time frame so you really stand a very good chance at your leopard whenever you can hunt.

The Luangwa river in Zambia for a daylight hunt and the lowveld in Zim for a night hunt are probably the best leopard hunts in Africa. Tanzania and Mozambique are also very good but require a much more expensive booking.
