Nice trophys! I also would rather shoot a lion than any other game animal in Africa. Could you tell how old this lion was. Picture tells me he wasn't that old.

IMHO between 3 to 4 years old..... Chuck, did the fact it was seen on the proverbial "11th hour" influence the PH's and your decision to take him? Had that been seen on the first few days of the safari would you or the Ph have held off for a larger one?

They guessed he was at least 5 years old. No visable baby spots, slightly worn teeth, hanging weight of about 465 lbs. Chewore is pretty thick. they do get a few with big manes, but a lot without too, that are adult males. As I indicated, he was about 160 yards away and laying in the shade of a riverbank. In my excitement I did not take the time to measure him up. I trusted my PH and couldnt be happier. Sure, I would have liked an MGM lion , But I didnt
expect to find such a cat in a thickly covered area like this any way. I had the option of hunting with Whittall in his Save Valley area where he suggested I would have a better chance for a fuller maned lion. As I said In my letter,that was not why I chose to hunt in the Chewore area of Zimbabwe. Chuck

I hunted in the same area with the same PH last Oct. We had two lions in the same specific area Chuck shot his. We never saw the larger one, larger as indicated by his tracks. We watched the younger, smaller one for twnty minutes. He was quite large but didn't pass muster with the PH, Richard Tabor, even as our chances of success were running thin.

As Richard put it, "No matter how much I want you to get your lion, I can't make this one the right lion. He is just a year, maybe two, too young. Chuck's lion is not the one we watched for so long in broad daylight. That one had a fuller main. I don't believe Richard Tabor would sanction taking a lion that he, or his boss, Roger Whittall, thought was too young.

BTW, Roger, and Richard as well, are proponents of cutting lion quotas and instituting age restrictions.

Congratulations and I have to agree with you the Chewore area is wild, isolated and a great place to hunt my favorite so far. BTW looks like you also brought a very nice trophy with you.
