Have just booked a cow elle hunt in the Omay
area and a plains game hunt in the Kwekwe area
with Buzz Charlton.
Any info. on the areas?????

I hunted plains game south of Kwekwe on Ken King's ranch a couple years ago. It was a good time. Between my hunting partner at I we took kudu, zebra, warthog, eland, blue wildebeest, and impala. We saw duiker, steinbuck, giraffe, black rhino, reed buck, baboons and several types of monkeys. There were also leopards and cheetah in the area.

Things may have changed since I also hunted King's place in Kwekwe. The hunting actually was quite good but the property was a little small for my taste. Seems like we encountered the fence at the same spot multiple times each day. I probably would not have minded so much but my well known booking agent did not let me know it even was a fenced property. At that time I was pretty ignorant about Africa in general so the fence was quite a disappointment.

I hunted Ken's 20,000 acres in '02 and the fences were a joke. They weren't maintained at all at that point and game ran right through as if they weren't there in most places.
I'm sorry you were dissappointed. We had a good time. Ken was under a lot of pressure from the government to leave so I did feel it was possibly hunted a little too hard (on his way out) but we had a good time.

Hi Wombat, have hunted Omay north twice in recent year's and have found it has many Elle and you will have a great time geting close to them tring to sort out the tuskless ones without young,in particular amongst the Jesse thickets.
Do you know when and which camp you will be at and how many days will you be in the Omay for?
Don't forget to make sure your PH has a couple Bed roles for some nights out fly camping.

We hunted Roy Smalls ranch out of Kwekwe last year and saw lots of game. I shot a good sable and could of shot lots more. There were no fences except unkept four strand barbwire for the domestic cattle herd that has since been mostly sold off. The black rhino in the area made a mess of what fences were left. Never did see a high fence.

In the '95 and '97 my hunting partner and I hunted Central Estates which is/was in the Midlands on the Sebakwe River which is a little east of KweKwe.

The animals we hunted were leopard, sable, eland, kudu, blue wildebeest, zebra, tsessebee, impala, duiker, steenbuck, bushbuck, oribi, reedbuck, warthog, civet cat, jackal, bushpig and birds. Struck out on the cats, bushbuck and bushpig. Trophy quality was somewhat average overall except the pygmy antelopes. Of course there were some exceptional trophies but few and far between.

I hunted the OMAY for 21 days in June 2004 with HHK. They told me up front it was not a "great" plains game are. My primary animals were buff, cow elephants, leopard, hopefully a lion, and "whatever" plains game got in the way.
I had a great safari, a great buff, 2 cow elephant, a very good kudu, waterbuck, impala, super klipspringer, and civet cat, side striped jackel, and a baboon. After arrival I got an Elephant Bull on quota and shot a 55 pounder, with beautiful Ivory.
We saw quite a lot of leopard tracks, I had a bait in nearly every tree, lion baits too. Never got a shot, but the fella in a nearby camp killed a nice lion, and missed a shot on a great leopard 2 different times, [he was using my waterbuck for bait, which made me feel good, I met him he was a good guy] so they were in the area for sure.
In short I had a great hunt.
The only mistake I made is I stayed 21 days instead of 31, or 41 or.....
I cannot say enough nice things about HHK and my PH Wayne Edwards. Everything was as represented and Wayne was a great guy to be around.

Let me add that cow elephant hunting is the most fun, most exciting hunting I have ever done.

On my March 2006 trip I hope to shoot 2 trophy bulls, 4 to 6 crop raiding bulls, and 5 cow elephants. For me it is ALL about Elephants.
