Very good read, Larry. I enjoyed it very much, especially the lion hunt. I also love the body on that eland.

I am heading to Hammond next summer with my daughter. Not sure of Leopard or buff, but after this buff is in the lead.

Larry,

Great safari and nice bag. A lion is a very special trophy. The Save is a great safari destination. I think Zambezi actually was over 80% successful on leopard in '09 and your results would have been differnt earlier in the year when it was cooler.

Congrats!

Mark

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Beautiful lion... congrats! Did you stay at Hammond? Very nice camp as I remember from my stay there in '06. Well done report and some excellent trophies.

No, I stayed at the ARDA camp. We were around the Hammond camp from time to time as the skinning area was there.

Congratulations on some great trophies. Especially the lion, it is indeed a trophy to be taken now or lost forever.

Congratulations on an excellent safari, fantastic Kudu.

I am a bit surprised by your experience with Leopard hunting, from earlier reports the Leopard population in Save seems to be good.

I just read the lion report . . . AGAIN. What a hunt. I can't wait to hunt a lion in 2011.

Ahmed: Regarding the leopards on Hammond, ARDA, and the Save in general, they are there, but the hunting is much better earlier in the year (May & June).

Will:

I think you are correct. The heat was a major problem. The heat was really tough. At times baits were lasting no more than 2 days.

I have been around the block a few times and I have a pretty good idea of the situation. Some of this area has to be absolutely crawling with leopards. It is also crawling all kinds of prey for them including some things one would not normally think about such as cane rats.

I believe June or July may well have yielded better results.

One other thing that I didn't mention was the major league bush fire that burnt a massive portion of the adjoining property while I was there. There is little doubt in my mind that it changed game behavior. Whether this had an impact on the leopards and elephants, I can't say with certainty. It is at least a possibility if not a probability.

Very enjoyable report. Excellent trophies. We're looking at the same camp in 2011, but earlier. Very nice buff, too.

One other interesting this that I forgot to add is the scientific study going on in the SAVE. Blood samples are taken on every animal as are jaw bones. They age each critter and test for diseases. They are very serious about it.

Anton:

Murray Osborne of Osprey was my camera man. I understand his wife does the editing. There are 6 dvd's of raw footage.

I think I will get the edited version in about 2 more months. She has about 6 ahead of me.
