poulsboam i out of luck?
i would love to go on a plains game safari but the only time i would be able to go is from dec.16 to arond jan. 9 is there any decent hunting/weather that time of year?

500grainsLast time I checked it was 15K all inclusive for a wet season bull ele hunt. Imagine being soaked all the time, getting the Toyota stuck in the mud a lot, the mud packing thick on the bottom of you boots when you walk, mopane flies crawling in your eyes and ears, tse tse flies biting you relentlessly, and mosquitoes covering you with itchy little welts. Plus malaria.

shakariYou can hunt plains game year round in South Africa and Tuli Block Botswana. (Although the rest of Botswana has to stop hunting in September), wherever you hunt in Southern Africa at that time of year will be very hot and probably wet...... although of the countries discussed Botswana would probably/usually have the lowest overall rainfall.
If you want Zimbabwe you could speak to someone like Buzz Charlton, Roger Whittal, John Sharp or our very own Ganyana (and a few others) and ask their opinion on how uncomfortable/difficult the rains might make the hunt....any of those names will give you an honest answer.
Another alternative if you'd consider a Buff hunt(albeit probably more expensive) would be Masailand Tanzania where the season ends 31st December and the rains come in around that time.

D99I would find an outfitter in the Drakensburg mountains in South Africa. It will be cooler, than anywhere else in Africa at that time. It will be wet, but it will still be cool enough to hunt.

is 15 for a Trophy ele? Sounds pretty bad but if you really want to bag an elephant and don't have the cash for a regular season hunt then maybe. Also if you went during a drought year when the rains weren't that bad then its a bargain.

JudgeGLast year at Thanksgiving time I found out that I had a buck or two and some time free. I shopped around and found a CITES elephant hunt for a very low price... It seems that a license was left over from an unsuccessful client or something and the company wanted to keep the camp open, etc. The first week of December, also in camp, there was a lion hunter taking advantage of the same type deal. Both of us were successful and spent less than 1/2 of the usual fee.
Last December in Zimbabwe, it was quite hot and steamy with an occasional rain that goo'ed up the roads with mud that stuck like glue to everything and weighted a ton a cubic inch...
All that aside, I'd return in a minute if I had the chance. It you can wait until the last minute, no telling what you can find.

That is unbelievable, JudgeG is using his "friends" to pay for his own hunting. Damn that makes me mad. There is nothing worse than a thief, except when someone steals your trust. 15K was for everything (2004 quote), but I have no idea of 2006 prices.

poulsboi'll take that as i'm out of luck. not really interested in elephant, would like to take some plains game animals, oh well i guess when i'm really serious about going i'll just quit my job and go.

ChrisTroskiePaulsbo, December / January is hotter than the rest of the year and there might be a chance of rain but you could still get a good hunt in South Africa. To date we have had very little rain over here and the bush is still in perfect condition for hunting. Your biggest challenge will not be the heat and the rain, but finding a hunting area that still has good quality game on it. Zingeli_SafarisHunting this time of year in South Africa is defenitely not impossible. You might encounter rain which will be welcomed at this stage but it is really hot.
It has been done before you won't be the first.
