Okay, here goes- I hope. My first time posting pics using Photobucket so will do my first attempt with just one photo. This Cape Eland was running at 200 yards. I used my 30.06 and Barnes 180 grain Triple Shock bullets. First shot, I led to much and hit him in jaw. Second shot, not enough lead and hit him in mid stomach. That shot turned him and stopped with his rear to me. Third shot was in the butt and he started hauling ass again! Fourth shot was just right-hit him in the neck and down he went. Thankfully I did not have to load again. I was pretty rattled!! Estimated his weight at 1800 pounds. Finally, a nice blue bull for my trophy room!

Well that seemed to work so here is my Waterbuck. About 50 yards into the neck as that was all I could see of him. He thought he was concealed in some trees along a dry riverbed. 31" horns.

Here's my son's 55" Kudu. He used my .375 and Speer Grand Slam bullets. This was a one shot kill just behind the shoulder.

and here is his Mtn Zebra that had one hoof missing from a poachers snare. Again, a one shot kill at about 200 yards with the .375

My Burchell's Zebra. Again about 200 yards into the shoulder with the old '06. Bullet went and left on the same color stripe!

My Black Wildebeest. Shot broadside at 80 yards with the '06. Bullet went all the way through both shoulders.

My son's Blue Wildebeest. One shot into the chest with the .375.

Last picture for today. My son's Springbok. Shot at 100 yards through both shoulders.

Did you recover any of those 180 Barnes bullets from the eland? I'd be curious on your impressions of that bullet in the '06 and overall performance satisfaction with that combo.

Big Bullet-

Yes, the skinners recovered two bullets. Both were in the Eland. One was found on the offside of the neck. The bullet had hit the spinal column which caused it to tumble. The shank of the bullet was protruding through the skin on the offside. The shank was slightly bent but the tip had a perfect mushroom. The other they recovered was the one placed in the rear. I do not know how far in it went but would assume the stomach contents stopped it. It too was a perfect mushroom. I brought both bullets home and planned to weigh them but my wife unloaded my gear and now I can't find them!

The Barnes Triple Shocks shoot better in my rifle than Noslers or the XLC's plus I wanted to see how they performed on game. I was pleased. These were Federal factory loads by the way.

Steven- The Jack Russells went with us everyday. If the animal moved at all they were all over it!!

The '06 is probably a little light for Eland but for anything else it will do just fine. Heck, it killed my Eland and probably would have with one shot if I had been able to do my part. Like always, it's bullet placement.

Great trophies John - well done! Very nice waterbuck and terrific shot on the springbok by your son.

As I posted before, I hunted with Fred twice (leopard/buffalo, then lion/roan in the Caprivi), and he's a top PH, ethical hunter, and all-around good guy. I have not been to the ~25,000 acre ranch he and his lovely wife Rose run, but it sure looks like there are some good trophies to be had.

Yes, it was a great experience for my son. I can't tell you how many times he has thanked me. He has hunted with me since he was 10 years old (now 26) and was in complete awe. He has shown our videos to his buddies several times and has them in a state of envy.

If you have a child that likes the outdoors and animals and likes to hunt, you have to take him/her at least once. John,jr. vows to return to Africa sooner than later.

And the kicker- I couldn't have taken him to a better place or put him with better people.

I've seen the video and pictures from John's safari. I've also met Fred the PH. I think they are offering a very good value for the dollar when you consider the trophy quality, accommodations and personal experience. I would expect to pay quite a bit more for this safari.
