Dear Friend:
I wanted to let you know of my support for Senator Dianne
Feinstein’s bill to regulate .50 caliber sniper weapons. I am
pleased to co-sponsor S.935, the Fifty Caliber Sniper Weapons
Regulation Act of 2005.
These weapons are increasingly being sold in this country and
have no use for hunting or other legitimate purposes. Instead,
they are used as sniper weapons against humans, armored
vehicles or other devices such as radar or microwave
transmission equipment. In addition, dangerous armor-piercing
ammunition is readily available for these weapons on the open
market.
Senator Feinstein’s legislation would take an important step in
addressing the unregulated lethal power of these weapons by
amending the National Firearms Act to include .50 caliber
sniper weapons within its definition of a “firearm.†The
practical effect of this legislation would be that a transfer
of such a weapon, by sale or by gift, would require
registration pursuant to IRS regulations. The bill would not
ban any guns, and existing .50 caliber weapons would be
unaffected by this law until sold or given away.
I am pleased to cosponsor Senator Feinstein’s Fifty Caliber
Sniper Weapons Regulation Act of 2005.
Sincerely,
Barbara Boxer
United States Senator
