wapiti7Help in buying a .50
Guys, I am looking into a .50 single shot. Any suggestions on makes and models? I'm not on a "Barret" budget, but I'd like good quality and so forth......thanks..wapiti7

goneballisticI have 2 .50s, a State Arms and a Bluegrass Armory Viper. The State Arms is a very solid, accurate rifle, but I do prefer my Viper. I did an independant review on the Viper.
Viper Review Please note, order to ship times are much shorter now, than when I did my review, as the Viper was still fairly new then. If you can find an FFL to take shipment and just charge you a decent paperwork fee, I believe you can still get the Viper for under $2500. I could be wrong.

butchlocI just bought another one, and after much looking settled on the state arms big bertha. It's big though, with a laminated wood stock and all, but the extra weight and the broad based wood stock cut felt recoil by quite a bit. That model is 2800 with a 6-8 week delivery

Kingfisherbutchloc, did your 50 come in yet?
04 February 2006, 08:48
Shane006Doc52, do you need anything other than money for the AR50? Forgive my ignorance, do I need a FFL?
04 February 2006, 23:36
Doc52Shane:
You don't need an FFL to buy the gun. We would handle the money between each other and then the gun would be sent to an FFL holder near you who would do all the paperwork.
PM me if you want to talk more.

ranb40I own an LAR grizzly. As I can not do better than 2 moa at 550 yards with hand loaded match ammo, I do not recommend it. But then, maybe it's me.
I have seen stock AR50's do very well, modified AR50's do better. The more expensive McBros are good. I watched an ALS upper on an AR15 do very well.
It has been my experience that the M82's always come in last at competitions unless someone's rifle breaks.

RIPSingle shots: The Armalite AR50 and the Barrett M99 are equal for accuracy by my trial. Both excellent. AR50 weighs 37 pounds and the M99 weighs 25 pounds. Price per pound is a lot less for the AR50.

Bolt action Repeater: The Cobb BA50 has a Lothar-Walther barrel and a 10-shot staggered box magazine for about the same price as an AR50 ... oops, MSRP was about $2900 last year, but it is now $3600 ... demand is driving the prices up quickly, and the government is buying a bunch of these ... The BA50 weighs 30 pounds.
Get one if you can.

No John, it would be best to consider a rebarrel to something like the new .416 Barrett, in this case.
Remember the .375 Weatherby is an excellent "rechamber" for a .375 H&H, no doubt about it.
